The Practice of Econometrics: A Feminist Critique Brigitte H. Bechtold

A B S T R A C T : This paper defines feminist research methods and econometrics and then constructs a feminist critique of traditional m et hods of econometrics, notably regression and time series analysis. The role of academe and economics programs in maintaining masculinist econometric practices is also addressed. A list of remedies to be followed includes multimethod and interdisciplinary research, as well as increased reliance on inductive rather than deductive methods.

1 Morgenstern warned that "forecasting in economics differs from forecasting in all other sciences in the characteristic that, in economics, the very fact of forecast leads to 'anticipations' which are bound to make the original forecast false" [as rendered by Marget 1929: 314]. This criticism was recently rediscovered by Lucas (1976).
