The Veterinary Journal Literary Prizes 2007 The George Fleming, Junior Scientist and TVJ Review Literary Awards for 2007 have been announced. The winners are as follows:

1. George Fleming Prize 3. Junior Scientist Prize The George Fleming Prize commemorates the founder of The Veterinary Journal, Professor George Fleming (1833– 1901), and is awarded for the paper that is considered to be the most meritorious published in the Journal during the year. It is judged on scientific content and originality, style and readability, and contribution to scientific and veterinary knowledge. In 2007, the winner is Professor Dirk U. Pfeiffer, of the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, North Mymms, Hatfield, Hertfordshire AL9 7TA, UK ([email protected]) and colleagues Phan Q. Minh, Vincent Martin, Michael Epprecht and Martin J. Otte, for their article entitled ‘‘An analysis of the spatial and temporal patterns of highly pathogenic avian influenza occurrence in Vietnam using national surveillance data” (The Veterinary Journal, 2007, 174, 302–309; doi:10.1016/ j.tvjl.2007.05.010). 2. Review Prize The TVJ Review Prize is given for the best review judged on structure, content and state-of-the-art science, whilst being generally interesting and understandable for nonspecialists. In 2007, the winners were Dr. Ron Ofri of the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, P.O. Box 12, 76100 Rehovot, Israel (ofri@agri. huji.ac.il) and Professor Kristina Narfstro¨m of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Mason Eye Institute, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO 65211, USA, for their paper ‘‘Light at the end of the tunnel?

The TVJ Junior Scientist Prize is awarded as an encouragement to younger workers, and is given to the best paper published during the year whose principal author is a graduate within 5 years of his or her first degree. In 2007, the winner is Dr. Jill C. Higgins, from Loomis Basin Large Animal Services, Loomis, CA 95650, USA ([email protected]). The paper was written with coauthors Dr. Nicola Pusterla of the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Demosthenes Pappagianis from the Coccidioidomycosis Serology Laboratory, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, both at the University of California, Davis, CA 95616, USA. The title of the winning paper is ‘‘Comparison of Coccidioides immitis serological antibody titres between forms of clinical coccidioidomycosis in horses” (The Veterinary Journal, 173, 118–123; doi:10.1016/j.tvjl.2005.09.001). Prize-winners are chosen by the Journal’s Executive Board, who consider those papers published in the hard copy of the Journal during that calendar year. The prizes are in the form of books each to the value of £250 (about €350; US$520) selected from the Elsevier catalogue.
