THE VETERINARY JOURNAL LITERARY PRIZES 2009 The George Fleming, Junior Scientist and TVJ Review Literary Awards for 2009 have been announced. The winners are as follows: GEORGE FLEMING PRIZE The George Fleming Prize commemorates the founder of The Veterinary Journal, Professor George Fleming (1833–1901), and is awarded for the paper that is considered to be the most meritorious published in the Journal during the year. It is judged on scientific content and originality, style and readability, and contribution to scientific and veterinary knowledge. In 2009, the winners are Lucy Asher, Gillian Diesel, Jennifer F. Summers, Paul D. McGreevy* and Lisa M. Collins (corresponding author: [email protected]) of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Royal Veterinary College, University of London, North Mymms, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, AL9 7TA, UK, and *Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney, Australia, for their article entitled ‘Inherited defects in pedigree dogs. Part 1: Disorders related to breed standards’ (The Veterinary Journal, 2009, 182, 402–411; doi:10.1016/ j.tvjl.2009.08.033). REVIEW PRIZE The TVJ Review Prize is given for the best review judged on structure, content and state-of-the-art science, whilst being generally interesting and understandable for non-specialists. In 2009, the winners were Dr. George C. Russell of the Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK (george.russell@moredun. ac.uk) with co-authors James P. Stewart and David M. Haig for their paper ‘Malignant catarrhal fever: A review’ (The Veterinary Journal, 2009, 179, 324–335; doi:10.1016/j.tvjl.2007.11.007). JUNIOR SCIENTIST PRIZE The TVJ Junior Scientist Prize is awarded as an encouragement to younger workers, and is given to the best paper published during the year whose principal author is a graduate within five years of his or her first degree. In 2009, the winner is Dr. Bo Wiinberg of the Small Animal Hospital, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg DK-1870, Denmark ([email protected]) with co-authors Asger L. Jensen, Elizabeth Rozanski, Pär I. Johansson, Mads Kjelgaard-Hanson, Mikael Tranholm and Annemarie T. Kristensen. The title of the winning paper is ‘Tissue factor activated thromboelastography correlates to clinical signs of bleeding in dogs’ (The Veterinary Journal, 179, 121–129; doi:10.1016/j.tvjl.2007.08.022). Prize-winners are chosen by the Journal’s editors, who consider those papers published in the hard copy of the Journal during that calendar year. The prizes are in the form of books each to the value of £250 (about €278; US$412) selected from the Elsevier catalogue. Authors are welcome to cite the award within their CVs etc. The Editors would like to send their warmest congratulations to the winners for providing papers of excellence in a world-class field.
