Preface

Third Mediterranean Clay Meeting, Jerusalem, Israel, Sept. 30–Oct. 3, 2002 The conference attended by scientists and students from Mediterranean countries and other countries in Europe was mainly devoted to the chemistry, physics and geology of clay minerals, and their applications in protecting the environment, in agriculture and in industry. Geological aspects, ceramics and archeological aspects were covered in several lectures and posters. A few lectures were given on the subject of nanoparticles. An important aspect of the Conference has been to promote cooperation between scientists of Mediterranean countries. The participants and organizers hope that this Conference will also contribute to attempts of achieving peace and raising hopes in the Middle Eastern region. The first six articles in this issue deal mostly with Environmental studies and applications. Articles 7 –11 focus on the Chemistry and Physics of Clay Minerals. Articles 12– 18 cover Geological aspects, Ceramics and Archeological applications.
