CALENDAR OF SOLID STATE EVENTS
F.J. Blatt, P.A. Schroeder, Physics Department, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48824, U.S.A. 14—19 August 1977 International Symposium on Hydrides for Energy Storage, Geilo Norway. Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising fuels for the future. It is non-polluting, fully recyclable and has an almost unlimited supply potential. It can be distributed through pipelines or stored in containers for automative or stationary use. Conventional means of hydrogen storage has, however, several shortcomings. Alloy systems which can absorb or release large amounts of hydrogen at room temperature by pressures close to atmospheric pressure offer interesting possibilities. For several years extensive research has been carried out in many laboratories to find suitable alloy systems. However, a fully satisfactory system has not yet been found. It is the intention of this symposium to bring together research workers active in this field to review the progress which has been made and to discuss the future prospects. Invited lecturers will survey the properties of hydrides, both from a practical and fundamental point of view. Other participants are invited to present shorter contributions. This major conference will be held at the Department of Physics of the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. The program will consist of plenary morning sessions of contributed talks. In addition there will be panel discussions on several controversial topics. The invited speakers will be determined with the aid of an International Program Committee and the inter-relation between theory and experiment will be stressed. The major subtopics to be emphasized are: (a) Bulk electronic states (b) Surfaces (c) Magnetism (d) Superconductivity

The conference will be addressed to physical problems associated with optically excited states in organic! biological molecules, semiconductors and ionic solids. —

Henderson, Physical Laboratory, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland 30—31 August 1977 The 9th Conference on Solid State Devices, spon. sored by Japan Society of Applied Physics, will be held at Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tokyo, Japan, on August 30 and 31, 1977. The subject of the conference, solid state devices, will be broadly construed and topics of interest include the following: (1) Phenomena or material for novel devices; (2) Proposals for new devices; (3) Notable improvements to existing devices; (4) New proposals for or improvements in devices processing and characterization (5) New proposals for and improvements in IC technology. Five copies of abstracts of contributed papers must be received by the Program Committee Chairman Dr. Yasuo Tarui, VLSI Labs 4-1.1, Miyazaki, Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki, 213, Japan, no later than May 31, 1977 and should conform to rules as sent upon request. Papers submitted will be reviewed by the program committee. The number of papers selected for presentation will be limited to about 35. Each speaker will be allowed 20 minutes to present his paper. There will be several invited speakers. The language for oral presentations will be either Japanese or English. However, the Digest of Technical Papers and the Proceedings will be in English.
