news resolution M/AM4 of greater than 2000, constant throughout the mass range. Cycloidal double focusing ensures high resolution consistent with a high sensitivity of detection of ions. A new and unique directreading mass dial permits spectra to bc recorded on linear calibrated charts without need for re-plotting. Care has been taken to provide a system combining high performance with ease of operation. Using solid-state circuitry throughout, the compact M-66 includes a dual inlet system for gases, liquids and volatile solids. Provision is made for the direct introduction of less volatile samples, and the direct sample probe is easily interchangeable. An all-glass inlet system, and adapters for gas chromatography eluents, are under development. The vacuum system uses getter ion pumps, providing clean vacua down to lo+ torr and a total ion current monitor is provided. This combination of high performance and ease of operation in the M-66 is expected to extend considerably the routine use of mass spectroscopy in molecular structural determinations. TOF mass spectrometer
Several inherent advantages of the TOF principle not realized in competitor TOFs are, it is claimed, incorporated into the instrument. For example, there is no magnetic field, either in the ion source or the collector, or as a pump--eliminating magnetic interference with adjacent apparatus (of course magnets, can be used if desired). Further, its inherently non-critical alignment permits the instrument to be mounted in any position. The TOF is bakeable to above 4OO”C, and can be furnished with a “nude” ion source for direct attachment to a vacuum system with the source inside, or alternatively, the entire analyser, source and collector can be furnished in a configuration suitable for mounting directly within a large vacuum chamber. Resolution of adjacent-mass peaks is achieved to above mass 44; however, species can be identified to beyond m/e 250. The instrument’s sensitivity is 4 x lo-* amp/torr. 321
