The company says that current global demand for carbon fibre is in the region of 11 000 tonnes a year. This centres on industrial applications in civil engineering and construction as well as ships, vehicles and tanks for compressed natural gas fuelled vehicles. Over the next decade, it forecasts that demand will grow rapidly, surpassing the 21 000 tonne level by 2005. This trend is behind Toray’s decision to establish production in the USA, the world’s largest market for carbon fibre accounting for 40% of demand. The firm says it will initially procure precursor from its Ehime plant, but that it aims to integrate the CFA production facilities at an early stage. To this end, it will sign a contract with Monsanto a major US acrylonitrile producer to lease a 200 000 m2 site at its Decatur plant.
