MARKETS Two projects in China for BASF At end Jul 2013 BASF announced 2 projects in China. The first of these is to build an Ultramid brand polyamides polymerization unit in Shanghai. It will be situated on the Caojing industrial chemicals park where the group also operates polytetrahydrofuran and polyisocyanate units. The new unit will have 100,000 tonnes/y capacity and will enter service in 2015. According to Hermann Althoff (vice-president of BASF’s polyamides and intermediates division), demand for polyamide products from the technical plastics, fibres and films market will grow rapidly, particularly in China. At present BASF runs Ultramid polymerization units in Ludwigshafen, Germany; Antwerp, Belgium; Freeport, TX; and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The second project is also in Shanghai and concerns a €90 M investment in the creation of a CathoGuard cathodic resins and e-coats factory. This is scheduled to enter service in 2H 2015. It will be located near BASF’s other units making coatings for the automobile sector, thereby ensuring synergies and better efficiency. Resins made at the unit will be key intermediates for making several types of coatings. CathoGuard 800 is a coating designed to protect automobile components. equipment, the Rio de Janeiro plant was developed to create aqueous pigment dispersions that meet the specific needs of the region. With the opening of the facility, Sun Chemical also introduced its new Aquadisperse family of waterborne pigment dispersions for the deco coatings market. Designed for in-plant tinting of emulsion paints and ideal for low-odour architectural coatings, Aquadisperse pigment dispersions provide extra strength and value that customers find difficult to achieve on their own, and are formulated to be heavy metal, APEO and VOC free. The Aquadisperse family of waterborne dispersions features a range of 10 popular pigments ranging from Yellow 3, Yellow 74 and Yellow 42 to Orange 5, Red 112, Red 122, Blue 15:1, Green 7 and Black 7. The Aquadisperse product line produced in Rio de Janeiro will utilize the same modern equipment used at Sun Chemical’s other locations. Global succinic acid market to reach $836.2 M by 2018: Transparency Market Research According to a report released by Transparency Market Research, global succinic acid market was valued at $240.3 M in 2011 and is expected to reach $836.2 M by 2018, growing at a CAGR of 19.4% from 2012 to 2018. Global succinic acid production is expected to cross 250,000 tonnes by 2018. Increased demand for 1,4-butanediol, plasticizers, polyurethane, and resins, coatings, dyes and inks have remained the major driving factor for this market. However, high prices of raw materials and increasing environmental concerns are the major constraints for the market growth. Growing consumer demand for bio-based succinic acid and low production cost have positively impacted the

C O AT I N G S growth of bio-based succinic acid resulting in strong investment in new projects. This is expected to result in a increase in production capacity to fulfill the growing demand for succinic acid in near future. Emergence of bio-based succinic acid market is expected to offset impact of restraining factors such as environmental regulations, volatility in raw materials prices. Resins, coatings, dyes and inks dominated the market and accounted for 20.8% of the total succinic acid consumption in 2011. With 13.0% share of total volume consumed in 2011, pharmaceutical industry was the second largest application segment for succinic acid. Succinic acid demand is primarily a function of growth in application industries such as paints & coatings, infrastructure, food, footwear, medical, cosmetics and automotive. Bio-based succinic acid is expected to provide huge market opportunity for the players in the market, with a number of companies already in pilot and demo-scale projects for biosuccinic acid production. Europe dominated the global succinic acid market with a share of 33.6% in 2011 followed by North America and Asia-Pacific which together accounted for 58.8% of the total market. Asia Pacific is estimated to be the fastest growing market for succinic acid due to the rising demand from the most emerging economies such as China, India and Japan. Rapid growth of downstream industries in these countries is expected to drive succinic acid demand in AsiaPacific. BioAmber, Reverdia, DSM NV, Myriant Technologies, BASF SE, Mitsubishi Chemicals, Purac Biochem, Anqing Hexing Chemical Co Ltd, Showa Denko KK, and Nippon Shokubai Co, Ltd are some of the major manufacturers of succinic acid.
