UK a n d I r e l a n d SID b r a n c h f o r m e d The Society for In/ormation Display (SID) has officially recognized the formation of a UK chapter which will be known as the UK and Ireland Branch. This formation follows from the discussions held at the Eurodisplay 84 conference where the possibility of a European chapter was examined. A small group of UK members formed a temporary committee and set up a new chapter. The inaugural technical meeting of the UK and Ireland Branch will be held on 8 June in London where, under Professor Mino Green's chairmanship (of both the temporary committee and the meeting), Professor Cyril Hiisum will deliver an invited address on the current state of displays in the UK. the remainder of the meeting will be taken up with reports of the SID intema~ozufl Sympomum in

Orlando. The second technical meeting is planned for 28 September and will be held at STL, Harlow. The proposed theme is liquid crystal displays--present and future: the first part of the meeting will contain an overview of teolmology and markets and will be followed by tutorial-type lectures on the latest in

Public access videotex to beat home use systems Interactive electronic systems for obtaining information or performing transactions in public locations are poised to become a $4.1 billion industry by 1988, according to a Frost and Sullivan study. Development of large high-definition CRT Development of what is claimed to be the world's first prototype 1 m high-definition CRT and TV monitor has been carried out by Toshiba in cooperation with the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). The monitor uses a new standard of 1135 scanning lines, increasing the resolution from the conventional 300 lines or thereabouts up to almost 1000 lines. This technology creates the possibility of very large screen TV monitors with outstanding picture clarity and resolution. To create the large screen colour TV monitor, the company has developed a large callhre (12 nun) electron gun that reduces the diameter of the beams to approximstely half that produced by conventional (9.8nun) guns. enables the focus of the TV images to be improved. Also developed have been a new fluorescent substance for higher colour purity; a dynamic focusing circuit which ensures independent and highly-defined focusing at each point on the screen without affecting other areas; a digital convergence circuit to adjust automatically the matching of the basic colours as they intersect to prevent colour mismatching; and a Distortion Pin Cushion to minimize image distortion in the comer areas of the screen. banking systems have established 'a major precedent' for videotex systems to be installed in stores, shopping centres, and other public locations. It predicts that this will be ~he fastest growing segment of the videotex market' rather than athome systems commonly touted for shopping and the like. Total industry revenues including the graphics and video production aspects, are expected to climb from 1984's $80 million to $1.4 billion by 1986, on the way to the $4.1 billion 1988 total. In terms of hardware alone, the revenue figures imply equipment sales of over $800 million by 1986 and Sg billion by 1988. Two of the major subcomponents are colour monitors and videodisc players; monitors will appear in virtually all installations, and disc players will be incb,..ded in a high percentage of them. The report breaks down the market by end-use function (infermational; transactional; and demonstrational videotex) and by type of installation location, with technology and suppliem also discussed.
