ZENECA INVESTS £11 MILLION IN PRODUCTION

Dominguez Services Corporation, the water utility company, is to invest US$2 million in a recycled water distribution system to serve an ARCO oil refinery in California. The investment includes the contribution of a companyowned land parcel, upon which a regional water treatment facility will be constructed. Development of the recycled water distribution system and treatment facility will commence in June 1998 and is expected to be completed by December 1999. Under the terms of the agreement, Dominguez will initially provide the A R C O refinery at Carson, California, with up to 6000 acre-feet of recycled water annually. The plant will utilise micro-filtration and reverse-osmosis treatment processes, enabling Dominguez to offer a broad range of water products, including ultra-pure, industrial water, nitrified water and recycled water.

Zeneca Pharmaceuticals is to invest £11 million at its manufacturing site in Macclesfield, UK. The new plant is expected to be operational in early next year, and will produce the global supply of ' Z o m i g ' , a new migraine treatment. TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR WASTEWATER PLANT Three different options are currently being considered to treat 25 million gallons of sewage per day, near the border between Mexico and the USA. The South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed to treat excess sewage from Tijuana, and prevent it flowing into the USA through the Tijuana River

Valley. One option is to operate the plant at the advanced primary level, which removes solid material from the wastewater. The wastewater would then be discharged to the ocean via an outfall. The outfall is included in all the treatment options and its construction is scheduled to be completed later this year. A second set of options includes additional treatment by the activated sludge process, and a third alternative would add secondary treatment ponds to the existing advanced primary treatment process. "The selection of a long term treatment option for this international plant will assure that the governments of the United States and Mexico satisfactorily resolve a common environmental concern," said John Bernal, commissioner of the US section of the International Boundary Water Commission, which will operate the plant.

BOWATER PLANS US$220 MILLION INVESTMENT IN MILL Bowater Inc, the wood fibre products company, has announced a capital investment program of about US$220 million for its East Millinocket, Maine, pulp and paper mill. Construction on the projects is expected to begin in early 1999 and take up to two years to complete. The investment will improve productivity and reduce operating costs, but is not expected to increase Bowater's papermaking capacity.

The acquisition covers three facilities: Ransom and Pittston, Pennsylvania, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin, totalling over 1 million square feet of physical plant.
