A new drying chamber has been designed for use with the Freeze-Mobile series of freezedryers available from Cenco Instrumenten Mij, NV. Bulk and manifold freeze-drying can take place under vacuum in this drying chamber. For bulk processing the chamber is a front loading, single shelf dryer equipped with a stoppering plate for sealing vials under original vacuum. Six external ports with Quick-Seal Valves permit manifold drying in freeze-drying flasks which may also be vacuum sealed. Virtually all freeze-drying procedures are conveniently performed in this single facility. Samples are processed in serum bottles with special split-rubber stoppers partially inserted in each bottle. After the samples are frozen with dry-ice in an automatic Shell Freezer, they are placed on a tray in the drying chamber. The shelf is electricallv heated until the samules are dry. Atmospheric-pressure is then admitted to the stoppering plate, inflating the gum rubber diaphragm. The entire load of serum bottles is then stoppered under the original vacuum. The process tray accommodates serum bottles from 2 ml to 100 ml in quantities of 170 to 20 bottles. For bulk drying, the process tray can be removed to allow for beakers, test tubes, homogenizing flasks or Petri dishes. The tray itself can be used to hold up to 1.5 litres of material poured out in bulk. Control apparatus is also available. Cenco Instrumenten Mij NV. A 12 x 12 x 24 foot environmental test chamber has been constructed by Tenney Engineering Inc for the General Electric Company’s Reentry Systems Department in Philadelphia, USA. Considered to be one of the largest sub-orbital chambers in the USA the adjustment of a few dials produces, in a matter of minutes, simulation of any of the following conditions: atmospheric pressures equivalent to heights from sea level to 250,OQO feet; temperatures from 150°F below zero to 400°F ; and humidities between 20 and 95 per cent. The chamber has been recently employed for the exhaustive testing of a Biosatellite space vehicle built for the NASA’s Ames Research Centre and intended to conduct biological experiments in space.
