Shell U.K. E x p l o r a t i o n a n d Prod u c t i o n , o p e r a t o r in t h e UK sector of the North Sea for Shell a n d Esso, is u s i n g P Range Vertical progressing cavity p u m p s , from Mono P u m p s Ltd, on its Brent Charlie p l a t f o r m i n the North Sea to perform oil s k i m m i n g duties. The B r e n t Charlie p l a t f o r m is one of four p r o d u c t i o n platforms serving the Brent Field which is the largest in the UK
sector of t h e North Sea. Installed vertically w i t h i n one of the p l a t f o r m ' s legs, the p u m p s are required to remove oil from the c o l u m n a n d p u m p it via the reclaimed oil line a n d crude manifold into storage cells for f u r t h e r processing. Shell Expro required a reliable intrinsically-safe p u m p i n g system t h a t could be easily installed, serviced a n d maintained.

The p u m p s are required to p u m p a m i x t u r e of oil, sea water, H20 and particles, at a pressure of 9 bar. Robust and weatherproof, the p u m p s are designed to w i t h s t a n d even the most arduous North Sea conditions, including waves, sea spray a n d temperatures ranging from -7°C to 40°C. The pumps incorporate Mono's Flexishaft system, which provides a single c o m p o n e n t link between the rotary m o t i o n of t h e d r i v e s h a f t a n d t h e eccentric m o t i o n of the helical rotor. The reduced n u m b e r of moving p a r t s in the drive t r a i n e l i m i n a t e s wear a n d m a k e s lubrication unnecessary, removing the risk of failure d u r i n g n o r m a l operation. To e n s u r e c o m p l e t e sparkfree o p e r a t i o n , Mono s u p p l i e d t h e p u m p s with a special rubb e r l i n i n g so t h a t in the event of m e c h a n i c a l failure, t h e r e w o u l d n e v e r be any m e t a l to m e t a l contact. For a completely automatic fail-proof system, t h e p u m p s have b e e n i n t e g r a t e d with level d e t e c t i o n equipment for start/stop control, a flow m e t e r to i m m e diately detect n o flow situations, and a high pressure switch to p r o t e c t a g a i n s t over pressure. To m a t c h all offshore applications, the vertical P range is designed to h a n d l e flow rates u p to 140 m3/h a n d pressures u p to 18 bar; a n d is available as a single, two a n d four stage model in either carbon, stainless, d u p l e x a n d s u p e r d u p l e x steel.
