VFD inverters VSD and controller could for pumps improve production The industrial systems division of Hitachi America Ltd has launched a new series of inverters for pumps. The X200 range on inverters has a contactor-style (power input at the top/motor output at the bottom) package. Its voltsper-hertz inverter is a variable frequency drive solution, and carries the UL, c-UL, CE, and C-Tick marks, while the X200 is RoHS compliant. It incorporates a new Safe Stop feature which provides a hardware-based emergency stop function compliant with EN standards. Another X200 function decelerates and stops the motor using regenerative energy from the load when the AC supply power is lost.

R&M Energy Systems has released two new products for production control. The first, the Guardian Variable Speed Drive (VSD) is designed to monitor progressing cavity pump systems with precise torque and speed control in one package.

The inverter range includes an improved trip avoidance function, automatic energy saving function, built-in timing logic, analogue input math (PLC) functions, and RS485 Modbus/RTU communication interface.

Fluid level over the pump intake is controlled with manual speed adjustments, or automatically with the system software. The VSD also incorporates downhole pump, motor and rod speed and torque monitors, pump flow monitor and production accumulator, embedded rod string, tubing, casing, reservoir and pump model, fluid level monitor and control, and interface software for remote monitoring by network servers.

The VSD includes proprietary software and incorporates a complete model of the total PC pumping system. The sensorless control can protect down-hole equipment and maximize production by providing continuous feedback of torque, speed, pump efficiency, fluid rate and estimated down-hole pressure, the company says.

R&M Energy Systems has also launched the Guardian Sucker-Rod Pump Controller (SRP) as an addition to the Guardian product line of digital solutions. The Guardian SRP is designed to control

all forms of reciprocating artificial lift systems. The Guardian SRP integrates motor control, speed optimization, logic, pump fill control and rod load control into a single solution. At any instant during the life of a well or within a pump cycle, there is a single constraint that limits production. The Guardian SRP forces the system to operate at the particular constraint at each instant of time, thus maximizing production without compromising efficiency or reliability, the company says. This is particularly suitable for applications with variable in-flow conditions, as in coalbed methane, high gas/oil ratio and thermally stimulated wells. The Guardian SRP can determine polished rod and down-hole pump position, velocity and load without requiring external rod position or load sensors. Sensorless system variables are observed through monitor displays or recorded as time-based graphical plots for later use and review.

AODD pump offers lower pulsation Swedish sealless pump specialist Albin Pump has developed a AODD pump which offers 70% lower pulsation compared to traditional AODD pumps, a reduction in energy consumption up to 45 %, noise reduction, a 3–5 times longer operation time between service intervals and

an increased lifetime of the diaphragms with up to five times. This lowered pulsation is a result of the company’s patented air valve construction, flexible diaphragm suspension, a new valve construction and the central flow. The compact

outer measurements and capability to install the pump upside down, sideways or vertically is a result of feathered flap valves instead of ball valves. The pump is designed so that all vital parts are easily accessible without having to remove the pump from the pipe system, thus minimizing downtime.

Smart control valve positioner from SSI Spirax Sarco Inc (SSI) has released a line of electropneumatic smart control valve positioners. The new range, called SP200, can be fitted to any of SSI’s pneumatic direct actuators and has simple installation because of the absence of mechanical linkages between valve stem and positioner and the smart auto-calibration function. Local calibration and parameter setting can be performed through menu-driven software. Valve commissioning can also be simplified due to an auto-stroke routine and display of programming status, software travel switch status, 4-20mA input signal and valve diagnostics. The tight pressure valve shut-off reduces air consumption, while the adaptive valve control automatically adjusts for changes in air supply pressure, stem friction and more, maintaining accurate control. The compact positioner features single/fail vent action and function with 2-port or 3-port valves. It offers linear, equal percentage and fast opening modes with an output capacity of 5 SCFM (8.5 Nm3/h) at 90 psig (6 barg). The SP200 includes anti-corrosive, die cast aluminium construction, a local LCD indicator, a NAMUR standard mounting kit for attachment to yoke or pillarmounted actuators, and an optional pressure gauge block. The positioner is dust tight and resistant to water jets with an IP65 protection rating and compliant with EMC standard 89/336EC.
