Welcome to Munich It is my pleasure to welcome you to Munich and to the 5th World Congress of Biomechanics. This congress is the fifth in a series of international meetings on biomechanics and takes place in Europe only once every twelve years. We are very proud to be able to host the World Congress after exciting and successful meetings in San Diego (1990), Amsterdam (1994), Sapporo (1998) and Calgary (2002). Biomechanics is a field that is expanding and developing at amazing speed. Our program has been designed to present a broad range of topics, both established and groundbreaking from solid to fluid to cellular mechanics; from motion sports mechanics to automobile crash tests; from orthopedic, cardiovascular and neural biomechanics to biomechanics in nature. It is my hope that scientists and students from around the world will have here the opportunity to learn from each other and take away ideas for new directions in biomechanics. I am very proud to host the World Congress in Munich and I wish you all a very successful and fruitful scientific meeting and an enjoyable stay in Munich.
