This month’s cover story is about power generation and bringing electricity to rural locations. In many remote areas of the world, access to a reliable power supply remains a major challenge. On page 28 we look at a technique which uses a centrifugal pump as a turbine to produce power and the findings of one international pump manufacturer that decided to examine the issue. The World Pumps November issue also contains some water & wastewater application stories and a range of features including why carbon is so damaging to pumps and an air conditioning system in the German Football Museum. Our application stories start on page 18 with news of a European manufacturer of containerized and packaged plantrooms which is using pre-programmed variable speed drives to create a ‘plugand-play’ package. The Twin Cities Rescue Mission in Marysville, California has been providing shelter and salvation for 60 years. On page 22 we find out how its sewage pump problems were solved with a chopper pump, allowing the Mission to continue its good work. Liquid ring vacuum pumps used in the papermaking industry have heavy demands made on them during the water removal process. On page 26, we have the story of one pump distributor and systems builder that undertook the repair of a pump which had been operating for over 45 years in a papermill in northern Finland. Recent research shows that when heat transfer fluids are sampled more often, carbon levels are better controlled. Our feature on page 38 examines why carbon is so damaging to a pump. We end with a story on page 40 about the recently opened German Football Museum where visitors can relive their football memories in carefully controlled ambient temperatures. It’s all thanks to an air conditioning system which includes pumps supplied by a German manufacturer. Finally, thanks to all who made me so welcome at WEFTEC 2016. I didn’t manage to see everyone I wanted to, but it was a successful and enjoyable show. Look forward to seeing you all in Chicago! Best regards
