EDITORIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

I~.H. Zachariasen Award and N.F. Mott Award for 1983 I am very pleased to announce the W.H. Zachariasen Award for 1983 has been presented to Dr T. Minami of the University of Osaka Prefecture, Osaka, Japan and the N.F. Mott Award for 1983 has been presented to Professor J. Zarzycki of the University of Montpellier, France. Highlights of Dr Minami's and Professor Zarzycki's careers are published in the following pages. This is the first time these awards have been presented. The W.H. Zachariasen Award was established by the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids to honor a young scientist for publications in a three year period preceding the year of the award. The N.F. Mott Award was established to pay homage to a senior scientist for continuing contributions to the science of non-crystalline solids over many years. In addition to a certificate, both awards include a price of $1,000 donated by the North-Holland Publishing Company. For details of these two awards, please see Volume 55 (1983), page 1 of the Journal. The award ceremonies were held on July 3, 1984 in Vienna, Austria during the banquet of the Symposium on Glass Science and Technology in honor of Professor Norbert Kreidl. It was unfortunate that Professor Zarzycki was not able to be present. The monetary prize for the W.H. Zachariasen Award to Dr Minami was generously bolstered by additional contributions from four Japanese glass companies: Asahi Glass Company, Central Glass Company, Nippon Sheet Glass Company and Yamamura R&D Co. Ltd. The monetary prize for the N.F. Mott Award to Professor Zarzycki included additional contributions from two French glass companies: Coming Europe, Inc. and Compagne de Saint-Gobain. I would like to express my sincerest gratidude to all these companies and the management of North-Holland for their generosity in the cause of promoting excellence in the science of non-crystalline solids. The next Zachariasen and Mott Awards will be given in 1986 to candidates selected in 1985. Nominations from members of the scientific community will be welcome. John D. Mackenzie Editor
