IN 1999 the world market for all metal matrix composite materials (MMC) reached 2500 metric tonnes, valued at US$102.7 million. The market is projected to rise over the five years to 2064 to 4900 tonnes ($173.3 million), corresponding to an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 14.1%. These predictions feature in a new study from Business Communications Co (BCC) (Norwalk, CT, USA) entitled Metal Matrix Composites in the 21”l Century.. Markets and Opportunities. The market

figures comprise the full range of MMC materials, including aluminium, beryllium, copper, nickelbase superalloy, refractory metal, and titanium matrix composites reinforced with particles, short or continuous fibres. This growth rate will be fuelled largely by the expansion of current and imminent applications in the ground transportation, electronics/thermal

management and industrial markets. In the late 1980s it was forecast that defence/aerospace applications would account for approximately 80% of the MMC market by 2000, but figures for 1999 indicate that these applications account for only 5.4% of the total. While the military aerospace market remains an important target for the materials, opportunities have emerged in other industries, with the push for better fuel economy and lighter vehicles expanding usage of MMCs in automobiles, and high performance, heat-generating computer chips leading to increased interest in thermal management applications. The ground transportation market segment consumed by far the largest volume of MMCs in 1999, with a 62.2%~ market share. Growing at an AAGR of 17% from 1999 to 2004, it will continue to be the largest segment (70.3%)

BCC expects the industrial market segment to increase at an 11.3% AAGR during the next five years, reaching 130 tonnes in 2004, or 2.7% of the total market.
