WORLDWATER, KIRLOSKAR IN SOLAR ALLIANCE WorldWater & Power Corp (formerly WorldWater Corp) has disclosed details of its strategic alliance with Indian pump maker Kirloskar Brothers Ltd (KBL) (see Pump Industry Analyst, September 2004). Under a five-year agreement, WorldWater and KBL will develop projects that combine WorldWater’s solar power technology with KBL’s broad range of pump and motor products. The companies will work to use solar power to bring clean water, irrigation and dependable power supplies to people in developing and war-torn nations, where public infrastructure is inadequate or damaged. Iraq and Afghanistan, for example, are two of a number of developing countries where KBL is already selling its products. “Kirloskar brings a wealth of experience and longstanding business relationships in markets worldwide. This strategic alliance will enable us to employ our AquaMax products and other solar technology in markets we would not otherwise reach,” said Quentin Kelly, CEO of WorldWater. RK Srivastava, a KBL director, said that WorldWater’s solar technology was a strong complement for Kirloskar’s pumping products. “Working together, we believe we will be able to make a significant difference for a great many people who desperately need improved water and power supplies.” • WorldWater & Power Corp is the new operating name of WorldWater Corp. Chairman and CEO Quentin Kelly believes that operating the business as WorldWater & Power Corp conveys a more accurate picture of what they

deliver to customers. “In addition to water engineering, our company provides power to drive 600 hp motors and pumps with our proprietary solar technology, and that capability also needs to be reflected in our name.” The company made the name change announcement and unveiled a new logo at the annual shareholders’ meeting on 10 September.
STRATEGY CHANGE FOR FRANKLIN ELECTRIC Franklin Electric Co Inc has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of JBD Inc, the former Jacuzzi Brand pump company, based in Little Rock, Arkansas. And in a change in strategy, from November 2004 Franklin Electric will sell its submersible motor products in North America directly to water systems distributors as well as to its existing original equipment manufacturer customers. The company, which is the world’s largest manufacturer of submersible electric motors and controls, believes that this change to its distribution channel will result in lower costs, lower inventory investment and quicker delivery for its distributors. Franklin Electric said that the moves were in response to the changing market conditions in the submersible water systems industry such as the significant consolidation of industry players in recent years at both the submersible pump OEM and distributor levels. “Our prices to distribution (through both OEMs and distributors) will be set at a level modestly above that needed to recover our additional marketing and selling costs on an ongoing basis. It is our expectation that there will be little impact to our 2004
profitability, after considering the start-up costs of this endeavour,” said Franklin Electric CEO Scott Trumbull. Commenting on the proposed acquisition of JBD, Trumbull said that Franklin Electric’s major distributors had encouraged the company to consider acquiring a pump product line in addition to selling motors directly to them. Franklin Electric has been a long time supplier to JBD, which operates out of a 250 000 sq ft facility in Little Rock and has annual sales of US$30 million. “During due diligence we confirmed the overall quality of JBD’s pump product lines and found that JBD’s manufacturing capacity could be significantly expanded with only incremental investment,” explained Trumbull. “We believe that with Franklin’s global purchasing reach we can reduce JBD’s manufacturing costs, and that with Franklin’s manufacturing, technical and logistics support we can improve quality and availability as well.”
JOHNSON PUMP TO CREATE NEW BUSINESS AREA Sweden’s Johnson Pump is setting up a new division that will run operations within infrastructure, specializing in water, heating and other related areas. As a result, Johnson Pump will consist of two divisions: one will manage the current pump activities and the other division will run operations within infrastructure. Johnson Pump has already acquired 19% of Fjärrvärme i Täby AB, a consulting company that previously owned and operated district heating plants in Sweden. Johnson Pump management says that it hopes to carry out a number of strategic acquisitions within infrastructure by the end of 2004.
