Europe Citizens of Europtx should not attempt to drink rhr rainwater, according to neM research from a Swiss research team. Precipitation can regularly contain so much pesticide thar ir could actually be harmful ro ingest. A prolonged downpour after a warm dry period when crops are sprayed is said to yield the worst quality rainwater. Cl-de Last year’s drought conditions have drasticall, reduced water levels across the country. Lack of water in rhc dams has left hydroelectric srations are struggling to operate, and authorities are planning an ongoing series of nationwide power cuts. Electricity is Likely ro be rationed until gas-powered be supplies can eventually brought back online. Complaints that overUK pumping of rivers has reduced many of them to unacceptabl! low levels have prompted a new set of protective legislature. Soon, rivers will be legally protected from water companies who attempt to remove too much water. Existing licences will be reviewed and controlled, while new licences will be issued for a finite period only. Nepa A water resource convention in Katmandu has ended with a call for better cooperation on hydro-electric power, and on the creation of reservoirs in Southern Asia. Otherwise the poorer nations in the region will continue to suffer conflict over water resources, and river flooding over the monsoon season which claims many lives each year and overwhelms vast tracts of land. It was also recommended that the process ofwater distribution throughout the dry season be improved. r”

Zimbabwe commission takes axial-flow pumps to the next stage Four Orbit axial-flow pumps have been installed at Zimbabwe’s Triangle Sugar Estates to transfer water from the Mutirikwi River into irrigation canals. Delivered in November, the five-stage pumps are the largest yet manufactured in Orbit’s 600 mm nominal-bore range, and represent an order worth R800 000 to the company, excluding motors. Orbit Pump Manufacturing has previously designed 600 mm axial-flow pumps to include only four stages. For the Triangle application, an additional stage was incorporated into the design of the pumps to cater for increased head. Shafts from Orbit’s 900 mm axial-flow range were used to compensate for additional torque. The four pumps feature an enclosed tube design with an external source of clean water pumped down the shafts to protect cutlass bearings against sediment from the river. PLC systems open solenoid valves on the service water to the pumps during start-up, creating backpressure until the start-up sequences on the main pumps are initiated. All pumps were extensively tested before delivery.A preliminary test using Orbit’s own test rig was made at low speed, with interpolation of test results providing a favourable indication of

pump performance at the higher speed. Class B tests at a full speed of 980 rpm, and absorbed power of 330 kW, were carried out at the South African Bureau of Standards facility in Pretoria. The Triangle Sugar Estates order is seen as a prestigious addition to the track record established by Orbit Pump Manufacturing in axial-flow technology as it relates to the irrigation of sugar plantations. Orbit’s axial-flow design proposals for sugar plantations near Maputo, and the company’s installations at the Sucoma sugar plantations in Malawi, were apparently both factors behind the success of the bid for the Triangle order.
