ZINC PIIOSPIIAft CONVIRS.ON COATING

U.S. Patent 5,868,874. Feb. 9, 1999 C.E. Rossio, assignor to PPG Industries Inc., Pittsburgh

A process for forming a zinc phosphate coating having a coating weight of at least 150 mg/ft 2 (1,612 mg/m2 )on an aluminum substrate comprising contacting with a zinc phosphate conversion coating bath, which contains 0.4 to 2.5 gIL zinc; 5 to 26 gIL phosphate; 0.4 to 1.5 gIL of fluoride; 4 to 400 mgIL ferrous ion; and 0.01 to 2 gIL ammonium ion, wherein fluoride ion is provided from ammonium bifluoride, which also acts as a source of ammonium ions, and wherein the zinc phosphate coating is formed on the

aluminum substrate optionally in the presence of an accelerator. MAGNDIION SPUnmlING SVSTIM

U.S. Patent 5,868,914. Feb. 9, 1999 J.F.M. Landsbergen and J. Visser, assignors to ODME International B. V., Veldhouen, Netherlands

A magnetron sputtering system comprising a chamber with a flat cathode plate; an anode centrally positioned on the flat cathode plate; an annular auxiliary electrode; a device for receiving a flat substrate to be coated with cathode plate material at a position opposite and parallel to the cathode plate and present outside the chamber; and a magnetic device for generating an electron trap

over part of an intermediate area of the sputtering surface of the cathode plate; whereby the magnetic device generates an asymmetric magnetic field. IUCTIIODIPOSITION 01' A CHIIOMIUM COATING CONTAINING MUD INCLUSIONS

U.S. Patent 5,868,917. Feb. 9, 1999 P. Benaben, assignor to Floquet Monopole, Poissy, France

A process for providing a substrate with a protective coating comprising a chromium matrix in which solid particles are distributed, said process comprising electrodepositing from an aqueous solution comprising trivalent chromium obtained from a reduc-
