Preface
28th International Pittsburgh Coal Conference (IPCC) Section
The collected papers presented in this section were based on presentations made at the Coal Science sessions of the 28th Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference, held on 12–15 September 2011 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference brings together experts in a broad range of coal science and engineering topics. In addition to the volunteered oral and poster presentations, the conference features three sessions of keynote speakers addressing cutting edge topics influencing coal production and utilization. IPCC section Guest Editor: Jim Hower
Dr. Jim Hower has been the senior coal petrographer at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research since 1978 and is an adjunct professor in the university’s Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences. He was editor-in-chief of International Journal of Coal Geology from 1999 through 2008 and continues to serve as Honorary Editor of the journal. In 1999, he had a brief role as a fictional character (a coal geologist) in Karen Rose Cercone’s mystery novel Coal Bones.
