NEWS American Board of Endodontics Clarifies Policy New policies affecting time requirements for various steps in the certification process became effective on January 1, 1985. Although the policy changes were explained in detail in the Communique and the Journal of Endodontics, the American Board of Endodontics (ABE) has r e c e i v e d numerous questions regarding the changes. The following information is provided to clarify new ABE policies. There are two basic policy changes, one affecting submission of a final application, the other affecting Boardeligible status.

Submission of final application This policy change applies to all candidates regardless of the time of submission of the preliminary application. Under the former policy, a minimum of 5 years of exclusive identification with endodontics, including the years of advanced education in endodontics, was required before a candidate could submit a final application for ABE approval. Under the new poficy, this requirement is reduced to four years of identification with endodontics. Therefore, assuming all other requirements have been met, four years from the date of entry into an accredited advanced education program in endodontics, a candidate will be invited by letter to submit a final application for ABE approval. Approval of the final application permits the candidate to proceed with the last two steps in the certification process: case histories submission and completion of the oral examination process (upon approvaJ of the case histories).

Board-eligible status This policy change applies only to those candidates who submitted preliminary applications on or after January 1, 1985. Candidates who submitted preliminary a~plications prior to that date should refer to the previous policy guidelines for Board-eligible status as outlined in the 1982 edition of the "Policy and Procedures of the American Board of Endodontics."

To maintain Board-eligible status, a candidate must complete specific steps in the certification process within certain time constraints. Failure to do so results in loss of Board-eligible status and requires resubmission of a preliminary application to reestablish Board-eligible status. The new policy is as follows: The written application must be successfully passed within three years following the year of approval of the preliminary application by the ABE. (No change from previous policy.) A final application must be submitted for approval within three years following the year of notification of having passed the written examination. (The previous policy allowed 5 years.)

43rd Annual Session

The case histories and oral examination portions of the certification process must be successfully completed within three years following the year of notification of the Board's approval of the candidate's final application. (The previous policy allowed 5 years.) The Directors of the American Board of Endodontics have initiated these changes in an effort to streamline the certification process, to allow earlier completion of the certification process, and to encourage educationally-qualified endodontists to seek certification as Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics.

An Open Invitation Each year the AAE hosts a reception at the annual session of the American Dental Association. The reception provides an excellent opportunity to meet Officers and members of the AAE and the ADA. It is organized to honor members of the dental profession who dedicate their time and efforts to the betterment of dentistry, including those AAE members serving as delegates or alternate delegates to the ADA. This year the ADA will hold its annual session November 2-7, 1985, in San Francisco, CA. The AAE reception will takeplace on November 2rid. Any AAE member interested in receiving an invitation may do so by writing or calling the Central Office.
