CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The 18th International Congress of Nutrition (September 19-23, 2005 in Durban, South Africa) encourages all participants to submit an abstract. Abstracts may be submitted for an oral presentation, scientific poster, or information poster. In order to assess their suitability for inclusion in the Congress program, the Program Committee will subject all abstracts to an evaluation process. The review of abstracts will take place continuously and notification of the status of the abstract will be mailed within 3 weeks of submission of each abstract. Presenters of accepted abstracts will be informed of the date, time, and mode (oral presentation, scientific poster, or information poster) of presentation 3 months before the Congress. ABOUT PEOPLE Honors ADA Member Mary Ellen Posthauer named NPUAP President Mary Ellen Posthauer, RD, has become the first registered dietitian to serve as president of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP). Posthauer has been an integral part of the panel for many years; she was ADA’s Alliance Representative and a panel board member and secretary. She has also served on the NPUAP education committee and has spoken at numerous seminars throughout the United States and abroad. Obituaries Jo Bonnet Sullivan, MS, RD, June 2004, received her Master’s degree from State University College in Brockport, NY. Her most recent position was as outpatient dietitian for the Outpatient Education Services Deadline for submitting material for the People and Events section is the first of the month, three months before the date of the issue (eg, May 1 for the August issue). Barbara Zintz Benoit, MEd, RD, October 2004, was a clinical dietitian at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She completed her dietetic internship at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center and received her Master’s degree from Tuffs University in Boston, MA. After moving to Atlanta, she began teaching introductory nutrition for nursing students at Georgia State University and served as a consultant to Georgia State’s Department of Health Science, where she developed the curriculum and course outlines for an undergraduate degree program in Community Nutrition. After 12 years at Georgia State, Benoit moved to Emory University where she was an associate in the Division of Nutrition for 3 years. In 2004, Benoit was honored with the Georgia Dietitian of the Year Award for her ongoing role as a mentor and contributions to the Atlanta Dietetic Association. Joanne G. Blackley, MA, RD, October 2004, was the Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Rochester General Hospital. She was formerly the director of Food and Nutrition Services and Dietetic Internship at Yale NewHaven Hospital and a former branch manager for Coram Healthcare. She was also an assistant clinical professor in the Yale Graduate School of Nursing and a lecturer in the Yale School of Public Health and Hospital Administration. Blackley also served as a member of ADA’s House of Delegates, an ADA National Public Relations Chair, and Chair of the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. Charlotte Dowler Martin, November 2004, was a member of the American Dietetic Association for over 50 years. She graduated from College Misericordia in 1942 with a bachelor’s of science degree in nutrition. Her working career was devoted to supervision of food service in hospitals and hotels. Martin also served as president of the New Jersey Dietetic Association. Sheila D. Ward, DMSc, RD, December 2004, was a professor, researcher, and director of dietetic internships and the Nutrition Graduate Programs at Indiana University. She spent her undergraduate career at the University of Kansas, earned her Mas-
ter’s degree from the University of Iowa, and earned the Doctor of Medical Science degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition to her academic and scientific career, Ward was also an involved member of the professional community, serving as a member of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association’s Board of Editors, a site visitor of dietetic internship programs for the ADA’s Council of Education, and a member of the ADA’s Review Panel for accreditation of dietetic education. Frances Rowe Adams, RD, January 2005, was a 57-year member of the American Dietetic Association. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a bachelor’s degree in Foods and Nutrition and, after interning at Brooke General Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, TX, became a registered dietetian. Adams then worked as a therapeutic dietitian at DePaul and Leigh Memorial Hospitals in Norfolk, VA, and Portsmouth General Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. She was also a member of the Northern Virginia Dietetic Association and served as a consultant to the Visiting Nurses Association as well as several nursing homes and hospitals in southern New Jersey.
