COWELL
Author of: Focus on the future of the midwife teacher
Principal of the Midwife Teachers Training College, Kingston, Surrey, since 1965, Miss Cowell trained as a nurse and midwife at the Middlesex Hospital and South London Hospital for Women. First appointment midwife at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, 1945-59, during which she took Midwife Teachers Diploma Course at Kingston, subsequently becoming Midwifery Tutor. Awarded British Commonwealth and Empire Nurses War Memorial Fund scholarship 1956, studying methods of midwifery teaching in Scandinavia and Finland in 1957. After leaving Oxford, held two temporary appointments in Royal College of Midwives and the Midwife Teachers Training College, Kingston. In 1959, appointed to Midwifery School, Righospitalet, Copenhagen, with invitation to advise on planning teachers course based on and linked with the University in Aarhus. On return became Principal Midwifery Tutor at Southampton General Hospital, before going to present appointment.

President of the Philippine Nurses’ Association 1948-1954. Delegate of above Association to Congresses of the International Council of Nurses. Member of several I.C.N. Committees. Member of Advisory Panel to the WHO Expert Committee on Nursing, 1956 to date. Author of at least 50 written works on nursing and related topics published in Philippine and other journals. Co-author (with M. V. Jackson) of a book Learning Nursing at the Bedside, University of the Philippines Press Inc. (1965), Recipient of Florence Nightingale Medal 196 1. 79

MERCY NNENNA OBAYAN Author of: Role of thekublic health nurse in relation to multiple births in Nigeria
Mrs. Mercy Nnenna Obayan is a State Registered and a State Certified Midwife from Kwara State, Nigeria. She received Basic Nursing Education at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and Midwifery education in the United Kingdom. Prior to taking the Post Basic Baccalaureate degree course at the University of Ibadan in 1965, she was the Nursing Sister i/c General Hospital, Gombe. Earlier she held staff nurses posts in University College Hospital, Ibadan, and Royal Childrens Hospital, Belfast, respectively, and has had experience in Maternal and Child Health Nursing as well as Medical-Surgical Nursing. She is married and has two children.
DR. REBECCA BERGMAN Author of: A study of the relationship between responses to attitude questions andpersonal variables of nursing students in Israel
Born and educated in Canada, emigrated to Israel in 1936. Obtained nursing and midwifery qualifications at Hadassah, Jerusalem, B.Sc. and M.A. at New York University, and a Doctorate in nursing education at Columbia University. Experience includes nursing service and education in Israel and with overseas agencies. Presently teaching in the Master of Public Health program at the Hebrew University, and in Family Medicine at the Tel Aviv Medical School.

Preparing for the future : A study of secondment among tutor and administrative students in Scotland-Part I
General training at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, followed by midwifery training at Redlands Hospital and the Royal Maternity Hospital, Glasgow. After experience as a staff nurse was appointed as a ward sister in the surgical professorial unit in the Royal Infirmary. Attended the tutor’s course at the Department of Nursing Studies, University of Edinburgh, and is at present a nurse tutor in Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Associated Hospitals, School of Nursing.
