PUBLIC HEALTH

The Society of Medical Officers of Health The Society in War-Time W e hope that the Society's circular of September 14th safely reached all meml)ers and that the decision to continue activities as far as circumstances allow has m e t with general approval. For the time being it has been impossible to hold a meeting of the Council owing to the preoccupation of its m e m b e r s with other m a t t e r s ; but it is intended to arrange a meeting as early as possible in the new session to regularise the current affairs of the Society and to settle procedure for the duration of the war. F o r t u n a t e l y the Council at its last m e e t i n g before the s u m m e r recess gave a u t h o r i t y for the f o r m a t i o n of a small e m e r g e n c y c o m m i t t e e to act until the larger b o d y could itself reassemble. N o d o u b t the Branches and Groups of the Society will find later on that a r e s u m p t i o n o f their meetings will be advantageous, for war-time

problems of public health will certainly need discussion. T h e p r o g r a m m e of "refresher " courses for 1939-40 m u s t be regarded as in abeyance. T h e decision at least to postpone publication of the Roll of M e m b e r s was to allow of its revision up to about the end of the year, b y which time m a n y m e m b e r s will have f o u n d their war-time posts. M e m b e r s who h a v e already been called up for active service will carry with t h e m the very best wishes of all their colleagues. PUBLIC HEALTH m a y become s o m e w h a t attenuated owing to the need for e c o n o m y in paper and to d i m i n u t i o n of the ordinary revenue, but we hope t h a t it will not be starved of material. N o w t h a t the regular supply of papers read to meetings is t e m p o r a r i l y cut off, we suggest that the opportunity has arrived for our m e m b e r s who have original contributions to offer--the more concise the better.
