Gasteroid Basidiomycetes on Postage Stamps M.O.MOSS School of Biological Sciences, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey GU2 5XH
With the publication of British Puffballs, Earthstars and Stinkhorns (Pegler et al., 1995), this diverse group of basidiomycetes has become more accessible to study. It is also evident that Britain is becoming home for an increasing number of exotic species. For example, the 'basket fungus' (Ileodictyon cibarium Tul.), featured in Mycologist (11) p184, is most commonly found in
New Zealand! It thus seemed appropriate to list those stamps in my own and the Society's collections which depict these fungi. In previous articles (see references in Moss, 1992) the lists have been presented by country but it is perhaps more appropriate to use the families and orders of Ainsworth and Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi (Hawksworth et al., 1995), as in the following tabulation.
AGARICALES Podaxaceae Gyrophragmium dunalii (Fr.) Zeller.
Kuwait, 1983,40 Fils This stamp is one of a set of 50, the majority of which are of flowering plants but none are labelled. Both Molitoris (1990) and Greenewich (1997) agree that another fungal stamp in the set depicts Terfezia leonis Tul., the 'North African Truffle' (an ascomycete) which is also depicted on a stamp from Algeria (Fig 2g), but Greenewich suggests that this one is of Montagnea candollei, whereas Molitoris suggests Gyrophragmium dunalii (Fr.) Zeller. I would welcome comment from those with experience of this group but the only lead I have is a fme illustration of Gyrophragmium delilei Mont. in Cetto (1980) and the comment by Heim (1948) that 'the non-deliquescent Montagnites (= Montagnea) forming the bridge between Coprinus, a melanosporous agaric, ephemeral and deliquescent, and the gasteromycete, Gyrophragmium'. The figure on the stamp is very small but it does seem to have a black hymenophore which would suggest Montagnea. Podaxis pistillaris (L.: Pers.) Morse
