IFToMM NEWSSHEET

IFToMM SYMPOSIUM--DUBLIN, SEPTEMBER 1974 The first International IFToMM Symposium entitled Machines and Mechanisms, University Research Work and Its Application to Industry was held in Dublin on 12-13 September 1974. Some fifty delegates from Yugoslavia, Germany, England, The Netherlands, U.S.A. and Ireland were welcomed by Professor P. Leahy, Dean of Engineering and Architecture, University College, Dublin. The symposium was opened by Professor T. Pantelic, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, who in his role as Chairman of IFToMM Commission C presented a paper entitled, "IFToMM Program on Collaboration of Science and Industry in the Field of the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms". Forty papers were presented with special reference to practical applications covering a wide range of subjects: dynamic modeling of high-speed machinery with backlash, cam dynamics and geometry, synthesis of linkages, knee prosthesis, balancing of rotors, switch-gear mechanisms, piston slap, and many other topics. The Symposium attracted industrial representatives from England, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Germany, who presented papers and contributed to the discussion of papers presented by academics. Had it been possible to give more notice of the Symposium there would probably have been an even larger representation from industry. The success of this first Symposium provides encouragement for Professor Pantelic to programme further conferences which promote the collaboration of industrialists and academics. The Symposium Proceedings have been published in a bound volume, copies of which can be purchased through: Dr. J. DUFFY

4th APPLIED MECHANISMS CONFERENCE The 4th Applied Mechanisms Conference will be held on 3-5 November 1975, in Chicago, Illinois at the Conference Center--University of Chicago. The conference is for mechanical engineers in industry whose work involves them in the design of complex mechanisms and mechanical devices. Research kinematicians and mechanism design engineers will present papers on mechanism design and analysis in a how-to-do-it manner. The conference will be highlighted by 269
