Calendar of Solid State Events Announcements for publication should be mailed to: Editor, Solid State Communications, Department of Physics, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. 19174. Submitted items must be in the format of the calender. They should give the date, title and location of conference, the scope of the conference including sponsors of the meeting, and the name and address of person to whom inquiries should be directed. 9—14 October 1977 International Conference on Defects in Insulating Crystals The conference is sponsored by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the USERDA, and wifi be held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The scope wifi cover topics from three main areas of research in insulating crystals: (1) Mass, Charge and Energy Transport; (2) Defect Production, Annealing and Aggregation; (3) Electronic and Vibrational Properties of Defect, Chairman; Dr. R. F. Wood, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Information: Dr. Y. Chen, Solid State Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, U.S.A. 7—11 November 1977 International Seminars on Magnetism, Sebnitz, G.D.R. This series of Seminars continues the tradition of the International Autumn Schools on Magnetism of the Section of Physics of the Technical University Dresden. It is organized by the Department of Physics of the College of Transport and Communications “Friedrich List” in cooperation with the Central Institute for Solid State Physics and Material Science of The Academy of Sciences of the GDR and the Section of Physics of the Technical University of Dresden. The Seminars for 1977 wifi cover the topics: itinerant electron magnetism; transport phenomena in magnetic systems and disordered alloys; and new magnetic materials and their applications. Information: Prof. Dr. K. Elk, Hochschule für Verkehrswesen “Friedrich List”, Wissenschaftsbereich Physik, DDR 8072 Dresden, Postfach 103.

22—24 March 1978 International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and Its Interfaces, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. An International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and Its Interfaces will be held at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, on 22—24 March 1978, immediately preceding the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Washington, D.C. This is a topical conference cosponsored by the American Physical Society, IBM, the Office of Naval Research, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency. The subject matter of the conference will be limited to the physics of Si02 and related oxides and their interfaces with other materials. Emphasis will be on fundamental questions on the atomic structure and stoichiometry, electronic structure, bonding, spectroscopy, vibrational and thermal properties, transport properties, defects and impurities. Subjects primarily concerned with the manufacture and performance of devices will not be addressed. The objective of the conference is to bring together physicists, chemists, engineers and other scientists who have been studying Si02 and its interfaces with diverse motivations and varying points of view. It is intended that this conference will provide a needed forum for the presentation of basic work on the interfaces of Si02, which would complement other conferences that cover mainly technological aspects. The program will include both invited and contributed papers to be selected by the organizing committee. There will be no parallel sessions. Advance abstracts will appear in the Bulletin of the American Physical Society and the proceedings will be published. Abstracts of contributed papers should be received by 28 November 1977 and should conform to the rules set by the Bulletin of the Amencan Physical Society. Authors may submit covering letters to assist the Committee in the selection of papers for presentation. .
