HE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS’ MEDALLION AWARDS, GIVEN AT THE ANNUAL FOOD & NUTRITION Conference & Expo (FNCE) every year since 1976, honor Academy members who have shown dedication to the high standards of the dietetics profession through active participation, leadership, and devotion to serving others in dietetics and allied health fields. Several awards are given each year to those members whose dedication to the Academy and service to the profession serve as an example to all.

Susan T. Borra, RD In recognition of:

and government organizations that created the award winning nutrition education program, “It’s All About You.” Her goal in any collaboration is to achieve the dual objectives of advancing the dietetics profession and improving the nation’s health.











Her role as a leader. Her career has been filled with key leadership roles at the national, state, and dietetic practice group level. At the national level, she served in elected positions as the president, secretary-treasurer, and director-at-large of the Board of Directors. Her role as an influencer. As senior vice president at the Food Marketing Institute, she is responsible for the design and implementation of the strategic plan for the retail food industry and oversees all traditional and digital communications for the organization. While at the International Food Information Council, she grew the Nutrition Program and quadrupled the budget. Her role as a mentor. She has mentored countless young nutrition and dietetics practitioners who are now established in government, industry, and the nonprofit world. She has worked tirelessly to publicly position nutrition and dietetics practitioners as the leading source of nutrition, food, and health services and information. Her role as a visionary. Her platform when she ran for Academy president contained the vision that consumers will demand the services of nutrition and dietetics practitioners and “dietitian” will be a household word. Her role in building partnerships. Indeed, this is how Borra has operated throughout her career as she has formed partnerships with others in allied fields. While she was at the International Food Information Council, she was co-founder of the Dietary Guidelines Alliance, a public private partnership of 17 national

Her profound impact on the field of dietetics and nutrition by the publication of her books used throughout universities and colleges, including: Lifecycle Nutrition: An Evidence-Based Approach, 1st and 2nd editions; Food Science: An Ecological Approach; Nutrition in Public Health, 2nd and 3rd editions; Essentials of Lifecycle Nutrition; Food, Cuisine and Cultural Competency for the Culinary, Hospitality and Nutrition Professions; Dietitian’s Pocket Guide; Food and Nutrition at Risk in America; Managing Food and Nutrition Services: For Hospitality, Culinary and Nutrition Professions; Rapid References for Nurses: Nutrition; The Healthy Young Child; and Nutrition and Meal Planning in the Child Care Center. In many of these textbooks, she offered her students the opportunity to share in a publishing endeavor and to author specific sections. Her outstanding leadership and service to the Academy, including rising to assume leadership positions within Academy groups, especially as chair-elect and chair of the Oncology Nutrition dietetic practice group and as its newsletter editor. One of her greatest accomplishments was as the founder of the Jewish member interest group in 2011, which she chaired through 2014. This practice group allows members to network and help each other find resources for kosher facilities and share their cultural heritage with other Academy members.

Her excellent presentation skills. Her efforts to combine efforts with the Muslim dietitians resulted in the session entitled Mythbusters: The Facts all RDs and DTRs Need to Know about Halal and Kosher Dietary Markets presented at the 2013 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo.







Her significant contributions over the past 4 decades to the nutrition and dietetics profession through her leadership, years of service, and commitment to advancing the profession through education, research, credentialing, and advocacy. Her contributions include her distinguished and outstanding record of service at all levels of the Academy including national, state, and district elected and appointed leadership roles. Her exceptional leadership to the Academy, including her appointment to the Council on Future Practice serving as chair for her final 2 years; as an elected commissioner of the Commission on Dietetic Registration, where she was vice chair in her last term year; as an elected delegate to the Academy House of Delegates; and numerous elected and appointed positions for the Atlanta and Georgia Dietetic Associations. Her instrumental commitment to moving the profession forward in her 33 years of practice in higher education at Emory and Georgia State Universities through her research, publications, professional presentations, and academic courses; her contributions to credentialing, including her Commission on Dietetic Registration work on the Advanced Clinical Nutrition Practice

Audit Task Force and the 2012 Visioning Report while serving on the Council on Future Practice. Her unwavering dedication to licensure and advocacy as executive director of the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics towards passage of the Georgia Dietetic Licensure Bill signed into law in 1984; her appointment to the Georgia Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians by the Governor of Georgia; and presentations and newsletter article publications at the local, state, and national levels.

Ainsley Malone, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, FAND, FASPEN In recognition of:

His key leadership roles at the national, state, and dietetic practice group levels. He served as chair of the Academy Foundation Scholarship Committee and served an elected position on the Academy’s Nominating Committee. He was president of the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as chair of the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition dietetic practice group. His demonstration of the value of the registered dietitian nutritionist in food and water safety, food security, food rescue, disaster relief, public policy, and education. His strong reputation as a leader in foodservice administration. He worked for more than 18 years in a variety of senior management positions in both acute-care and longterm care settings in the Greater New York metropolitan area. His more than 30 years of consultation for a variety of health care facilities on foodservice management projects including Neponset Health Care Center, The Osborn, and Bronx Lebanon Nursing Home. His skillsets in foodservice management allowed these facilities to assess their current operations and address significant issues. His consistent and long-term innovation to encourage member activity within his state affiliate, including the motivational “We’re Counting on You” theme, which facilitated member communication with elected officials on state certification within the profession. His unique experience in food safety, public policy, and emergency management, which are all firmly based on his professional experiences as an educator, speaker, manager, registered dietitian nutritionist, and an Academy member.

Her leadership and innovation in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Malone is regarded as the “pioneer in the practical application of advanced nutrition support” by establishing a nutrition support team at Mt. Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, OH, where she is the team leader. She has created enteral and parenteral nutrition care protocols, and her parenteral nutrition tutorials are widely utilized by health care professionals around the world. Her dedication to the Academy and the profession of nutritional dietetics. She is a gracious volunteer who, from the beginning of her career, was involved in many local, national, and international organizations. She has and continues to serve in many appointed and elected positions. She gives her time freely and is an inspiration to the members of the Academy and the American Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.). Ainsley is moving our profession forward and has “elevated the visibility of dietitians” as the third dietitian president of A.S.P.E.N. Her expertise on the topic of malnutrition. Malone has authored numerous publications and given presentations on malnutrition at the national and international level. She has worked with A.S.P.E.N. and the Academy in this area and has developed and implemented the consensus diagnostic criteria. She is a sought-after speaker on malnutrition in hospitalized patients and continues to contribute significantly to the body of knowledge on this topic.

Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RDN, LDN, FADA, FAND In recognition of: 

Her profound impact on nutrition and dietetics, specifically as an outstanding nutritional dietetics educator. She has inspired countless students to join the profession and encouraged faculty and young professionals to become leaders in local, state, and national Academy positions.





Her outstanding leadership and service to the Academy, including the Diversity Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Appeals Committee and Task Force, the Practice and Education Task Force, the Program Planning Advisory Committee, the Research Committee, the Quality Management Committee, Commission on Dietetics Registration Delegate to the House of Delegates, and the Finance and Audit Committee. She served as Academy president-elect, president and past-President. She also served on the Phase I Education Task Force and established the Alternative Pathways Committee to help alleviate the shortage of supervised practice experiences for students. Her dedication to building diversity in the dietetics profession. She served as a board member of the Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition member interest group and as chair of the Academy’s Diversity Committee, where she helped expand diversity scholarships and established best practices in education programs. Her scholarship includes publications in both refereed journals and writing for the public about nutrition education, food and culture, and health and nutrition issues in underserved populations. She exemplifies dedication as a scholar and resource on Latino health and nutrition. She believes in collaboration, has shared her expertise with faculty, and received multiple grants that have supported undergraduate and graduate student work. She was elected by the faculty as the University of North Florida’s Distinguished Professor in 2013. Judith Wylie-Rosett, EdD, RD In recognition of: 

Her outstanding leadership and service to the Academy. She has served on countless committees and served on the Board of Editors for the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and was the third chair of the Diabetes Care and Education dietetic practice group. She has also been a tireless volunteer for both the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association and has been a link between the organizations, holding many positions in each to promote the registered dietitian nutritionist as the recognized nutrition expert.

Her excellent reputation in diabetes nutrition and research. She has been the principal investigator of seven National Institutes of Healthefunded projects, which represent over 3 million dollars of National Institutes of Health grant funding. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine recognized her leadership and mentorship qualities and advanced her to the role of professor for the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. Her promotion of the role of nutrition and the registered dietitian nutritionist locally, nationally, and internationally. Through leadership, research activities, presentations, and publications, she has been an inspirational role model. She provides career mentoring to Diabetes Care and Education dietetic practice group members and to registered dietitian nutritionist faculty in public health/medical school settings. Publication of more than 180 articles and chapters. Many of her publications describe an expanded role for registered dietitian nutritionists. She is a highly respected and sought-after reviewer and has served on the editorial boards of

eight journals. She has also held the prestigious position of associate editor of Diabetes Care since 2006 and is the only registered dietitian nutritionist in that role. Martin M. Yadrick, MBI, MS, RDN, FAND In recognition of: 



His profound dedication to the profession and the Academy, making him a source of inspiration for many. He serves as an excellent role model and a positive voice for the Academy and the role it plays in communities, in advocacy, and with other organizations. His service and exemplary leadership at all levels of the Academy. As a young registered dietitian nutritionist, he gave his time to the district and became district president. He continued to extend his passion and expertise to two different state boards; a term as chair of the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition dietetic practice group; as a media spokesperson for

the Academy; as a professional issues delegate; and as chair of the Diversity, Honors, and Informatics Committees. His dedication and service to the Academy as a House of Delegates director, treasurer of the Board of Directors, and president of the Academy. His desire and commitment to promote, support, and grow the impact of the profession, which continued after his presidency when he served on, and subsequently chaired, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Political Action Committee. His awareness of the growing importance of informatics in health care and his vision that the profession needed to learn what informatics would mean to those in health care. His commitment to supporting the Academy as it developed means to help members be ready for this change in medical management by serving as a leader in this area, resulting in the Academy’s extensive work in Nutrition Informatics and the current Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Health Informatics Infrastructure tool.
