NEWS ominees sought for 1991 awards Ralph F. Sommer Award 1) The award is given for recognition to the principal author(s) of a publication of specific significance to the science and art of endodontology. 2) The award will not necessarily be given out annually but whenever an especially significant paper or book is identified. 3) The award may be given for articles describing developments or advances in methodology and/or materials and devices and for constructive influence on clinical practice. 4) The paper(s) need not necessarily be based on research, but should be philosophical, social, technological, etc., pertaining to endodontics.

The Honors & Awards Committee of the AAE is calling for nominations of individuals for the Edgar D. Coolidge Award, the Louis I. Grossman Award and the Ralph F. Sommer Award to be presented at the 1991 Annual Session in Washington D.C. Criteria for the awards are as follows: Edgar D. Coolidge Award 1) The award is to be given annually at the Coolidge Memorial Luncheon. 2) Recipient must be a living member of the AAE. 3) Individual must have had active participation in the AAE during his/her professional lifetime. 4) Individual must have displayed leadership and exemplary dedication to dentistry and endodontics.

All recommendations with supporting documentation must be submitted to Dr. Donald E. Arens, Honors & Awards Committee, c/o American Association of Endodontists, 211 E. Chicago Avenue, Suite 1501, Chicago, IL 60611 no later than February 1, 1990. The Honors & Awards Committee will act on all nominations and submit recommendations, as appropriate, to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Endodontists.

Louis I. Grossman Award 1) The award is given for cumulative publication of significant research studies which have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology. 2) The individual is to be a member of the AAE. 3) The award need not be given annually. 4) Presentation of the award will be made during the annual session of the Association.

Notes from here and there The Department of Endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry sponsored the First Charles G. Maurice Lecture on Wednesday, June 28, 1989, as a fundraiser for its Charles G. Maurice Resource Center. Dr. Maurice, currently Professor Emeritus, was the first Head of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Illinois. The program coordinator for this

event was Dr. Joseph Van Cura. Featured speakers were: Drs. Mahmoud Torabinejad, Robert Zelikow, and Zigmund Porter. Benefactor contributors were also honored.

International News The Malaysian Endodontic Society sponsored a two-day conference, Symposium on Endodontics, in April 1989 which was well attended by dentists from all over Malaysia. Dr. Syngcuk Kim from Columbia University, New York, was invited to be the guest speaker.
