First published in Miscellanea Mycologica No 107 Nov. 2014 Translated by Anne Andrews One of the “Greats” has departed. I first had the pleasure of meeting Marcel Bon in the 70s at an exhibition in or near Lille. From the first I was struck by the great intelligence and amazing knowledge shown by this jolly and very approachable man. He was an outstanding observer, both in the field and with his microscope. With dubious razor blades and hasty cuts he could find what he needed immediately while it would have taken us an hour. He could quickly hit on the critical character to identify the specimen or sometimes to establish that it was a new variety. He had a remarkably wide knowledge of almost all genera of fungi and also a great knowledge of botany. Marcel travelled all over France and Europe, exploring and sharing his knowledge and also his good humour. From the coasts to the mountains, in Switzerland and Italy and Germany, he observed thousands and thousands of species, shared his observations and replied to our enquiries, with his famous scribbles in the margins of our letters with arrows and hieroglyphics all over them.... We also came together at St Valery-surSomme at the famous Study Centre beside the Bay of the Somme for mycological marathons working from 8am to midnight on our collections. But let us not forget the meals, where he created a convivial atmosphere with his spontaneous plays on words and the famous Gros Plant (white wine)…In short, days which were both studious and entertaining. Then on 11th May 2014, when he had not been seen at our congresses for several years, Marcel Bon left us to be reunited with Marchand, Romagnesi and other friends who had passed away too soon, Michel Citerin and several others. He had taught so many mycologists, Jaques Vast, Regis Courtecuisse, Jean-Louis Cheype, Jacques Guinberteau, Daniel Reaudin and so many others including your humble servant.

Farewell Marcel. I shall not forget you. Admittedly your keys will eventually be superseded but they have been of such great use to us for Tricholoma, Agaricus, the famous Galeronaucorioids, Inocybe, Russula, Lactarius, Lepiota, Hygrophorus, species of the Picardy shoreline, species of Languedoc-Roussillon with Chevassut, Strophariaceae with Pierre Roux, several studies on the fungi of the Mediterranean, on the fungi of Cistus… In short he has covered almost all the families and all the regions of Europe!
