Wabag wins two European biofiltration contracts

W

abag Wassertechnik AG has been awarded two new contracts for its BIOPUR biofiltration process in Switzerland and Spain. The first project is in Windisch, Switzerland, which is in a nature conservation area, while the second is in a cliff cavern near a bathing beach in Llanes, Spain. Originally designed for 30 000 population equivalents, the Windisch wastewater plant is being enlarged to treat 90 000 PE. Wabag’s two-stage BIOPUR biofiltration process with upstream denitrification is being used for the Windisch expansion, with a tertiary filtration stage in combination with powdered activated carbon or ozone addition. The E3.5 million Wabag contract includes the entire electromechanical equipment for the biofiltration process. Startup is planned for 2015. Meanwhile Llanes’ existing wastewater plant is being extended with a biological stage to treat 34 000 PE. Under a E0.5 million contract, WABAG is providing the basic engineering and selected components to a Spanish consortium headed by Sadyt, which will complete the project by 2014 as the general contractor.
