*Textbook of anatomy, ed 4

W. Henry Hollinshead, PhD, and Cornelius Bosse, MD, PhD 1,041 pages with illustrations. Index. $39.50. Philadelphia, ]. B. Lippincott Co, 1985

The aim of this edition is to present ana tomic facts and concepts that are neces sary to appreciate the structural organiza tion of the human body, and to provide a foundation on which to build more de tailed and specialized knowledge. The study of anatomy should rely on visu alization of the parts and regions of the body in three dimensions based on an understanding of how these relationships came about and why they exist. Embryologic and clinical examples in the book are also meant to aid in acquiring this understanding. The general ar rangement of the book is the same as in earlier editions: Parti— introduction; Part II— the body systems; and Parts III to IX— the body regions. Many new figures (113) are included in this edition and color has been added to almost 200 of the figures already used in the third edition.

The opinions and comments expressed by reviewers are their own and do not represent the views of the Editor or of the American Den tal Association. Publishers of books and distributors of au diovisual materials and films are invited to submit new items for review in this section. ‘ Titles preceded by an asterisk are available from the ADA library.

A n examination system used to assess a number of years of study should be fair, uniform, and reliable. This selection of 412 multiple choice questions about gen eral surgery aims to provide an introduc tion to this kind of test used by examining boards. Questions are provided with in formation on each answer so that the stu dent not only learns the correct answer, but also why other answers are incorrect or why a question has more than one cor rect answer.

‘ Operative extraction of wisdom teeth, ed 2 Peter Tesch and Wilfried Wagner 160 pages with illustrations. Index. $27.50. Littleton, MA, PSG Publishing Co, Inc, 1985

Seven short chapters comprise the text of this book, which is a translation of the 1982 German edition. It covers all aspects of surgical removal of wisdom teeth from general principles to indications for re moval, surgical procedures, potential complications, and removal in patients at risk. The text is enhanced by many line drawings, diagrams, and color and black and white photographs. It includes a six-page list of references with articles as recent as 1981.

been rewritten to improve clarity and to provide up-to-date information. Many il lustrations have been added and some of the older ones eliminated. The organiza tion of the 30 chapters is essentially the same as in earlier editions, but there is one new chapter, “Alternative treatment modalities for edentulous patients.” The bibliography is now 46 pages long and includes books and journal articles as re cent as 1983.

‘ Anderson’s applied dental materials, ed 6 John F. McCabe, BSc, PhD 178 pages with illustrations. Index. St Louis, C. V. Mosby ColTimes Mirror Co, 1985

This textbook was written mainly for the dental student, but should prove useful to dental practitioners, dental assistants and hygienists, and dental technicians. Den tal materials are defined as those mate rials used directly or indirectly for the production of restorations, appliances, or prostheses. A lthough dentifrices and other substances are not considered den tal materials by this definition, they are discussed when they have an effect on the dental materials that are included.
