T h is book, how ever, succinctly d ocum ents an d expresses the ideals, p h i­ losophy, an d concepts o f th e au th o r. , T h e book has seven ch ap ters, each o f w hich em phasizes th e special entities rela t­ ing to o ral rehabilitation. Dr. Schw eitzer does n o t dim inish a science as it relates to th e e n tire gn ath o d y n am ics o f th e in d i­ vidual patient. T h e first ch a p te r calls a t­ tention to the d estructive factors o f m aloc­ clusion an d p erio d o n tal disease. T h e in ­ fluence of occlusion is well p rese n ted , rec­ ognizing posterio r an d incisal concepts, an d im p o rta n t genetic to leratio n . T h e a u ­ th o r’s ex p erien ce as a clinical p ro sth o d o n ­ tist is evident in th e section relatin g to v er­ tical dim ension an d invasion o f th e physi­ ological rest position. R eference to radical p erio d o n tal tre a tm e n t em phasizes th e im ­ p o rta n c e o f c o n s u lta tio n b etw e en th e p ro sth o d o n tist and th e p erio d o n tist. 1'he second ch a p te r covers th e use o f several adjustable articu lato rs an d th eir value in resto rin g fu n ctio n al occlusion in cases o f m utilation. A lth o u g h th e use o f each articu lato r, theoretically, is ju stified , m any a re com plicated. D r. Schw eitzer has co ncluded th a t successful reh ab ilitatio n can result if a sim ple tech n iq u e an d a r ­ ticulator a re used. T e n cases are re p o rte d , each using a d iffe re n t articu lato r. T h e th ird c h a p te r p resen ts 31 cases, dis­ c u s s in g o b je c tiv e a n d s u b je c tiv e sy m p to m s, h isto ry o f p re v io u s d e n ta l tre a tm e n t, an d th e plan o f tre a tm e n t. Each case is su p p le m e n ted by illustrations. T h e fo u rth c h a p te r is a clear a n d in­ structive dissertation o n o ral rehabilitation

versus co n fo rm ativ e dentistry. T h e fifth an d sixth ch a p te rs on occlusion an d effec­ tiveness w ere originally p ublished in the Journal o f Prosthetic Dentistry in 1981. T h e a u th o r d efin es occlusion, based on m ore th an 50 years o f reco n stru ctiv e dentistry. T h e co n sid eratio n s a re clear, concise, an d in f o r m a tiv e . T h e s e c o n d a r y c o n s id ­ eratio n s discuss th e im p o rta n t occlusal in^ fluence o f such facto rs as p erio d o n tal dis­ ease, te m p o ro m a n d ib u la r jo in t, tracin g tran sfe rs to an adjustable articulator, and canine lift. T h ese a re well p resen ted an d could certainly be used fo r d efin itio n in fu tu re discussions o f occlusion. W hat is n o rm al fo r o ne p atien t may be traum atic an d d estru ctiv e fo r an o th e r. T h e sixth c h a p te r is an evaluation o f reconstructive th erap y an d b rin g s to atten tio n the need an d value o f detailed d o cu m en tatio n and follow -up. S everal cases a re p re se n te d show ing prognosis, th e oral health , and in flu en cin g factors, an d w hen the patient was last seen fo r recall.
