828 University of Newcastle upon Tyne Dr William Dunlop has been appointed senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynsecology, and Dr H. Ranasinghe has been appointed senior lecturer in pathology.

University of Newcastle, New South Wales The following foundation appointments have been made in the new Faculty of Medicine: Dr R. M. Clarke, professor of anatomy; Mr Charles Engel, associate professor in medical education; Dr S. White, professor of human physiology; and Dr G. M. Kellerman, professor of medical biochemistry.

Royal College of Surgeons of England The annual meeting of fellows and members will be held at 2.30 P.M. on Wednesday, Dec. 10. A symposium on teaching postgraduate surgery will be held from 9.30 A.M. to 1 P.M. on the same day, and at 4.30 P.M. Mr Ronald Raven will give a Bradshaw lecture entitled Oncology-Attainment and Anticipation. International Index of Laboratory Animals The third edition of this index lists the location of over 4000 animal colonies throughout the world, and it is obtainable from the M.R.C. Overseas Doctors' Language Problems The Exeter Postgraduate Medical Institute with the Language Centre, University of Exeter, are to be the base for a one-year study of the language difficulties of overseas doctors and possible remedies. The investigation is to be supported by the Nuffield Foundation. Simultaneous Investigation and Treatment of Suspected Acute Adrenal Insufficiency-- The 4th line in the summary of the article by Dr Sheridan and Professor Mattingly (OCI. 11, p. 676) should have read" ... with suspected acute adrenal insufficiency ... Diary of the Week Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh A conference on recent advances in medicine will be held on Dec. 2 and 3 at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, 9 Queen Street, EH2 IJQ, and on Dec. 4 and 5 a symposium on infections and infestations will be held at the College for the St. Andrew's Day festival.

Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Mr J. A. Ross has been elected president, and Prof. A. W. Wilkinson and Prof. F. J. Gillingham have been elected vicepresidents.

Inquiry into Preventive Medicine The Social Services and Employment Sub-Committee of the House of Commons Expenditure Committee (chairman, Mrs Renee Short) is embarking on an inquiry into preventive medicine, and would be glad to have the views of interested individuals and organisations. British Association for Psychopharmacology The next scientific meeting will be held on Nov. 6 at the Royal Society of Medicine, London. Individual papers will be presented on behavioural, experimental, and clinical aspects of psychopharmacology, and Prof. R. G. Grenell (Baltimore) will speak on membranes, molecules, and memory. Non-members may attend as guests, and anyone wishing to do so should write to the honorary secretary, Dr David Wheatley, 325 Staines Road, Twickenham TW2 5AX.

Children's Hospital, Sheffield The Children's Hospital, Sheffield, will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, and will be holding scientific meetings in the week July 3-9.
