ADSA Member News . . . The deadline for the submission of position announcements for publication in the Journal of Dairy Science is the 25th day of the month, two months preceding the month of issue. For example, ads submitted by May 25 will be printed in the July issue of the journal. Fees for ads are based on membership in the American Dairy Science Association or the American Society of Animal Science. For members, the flat fee is $150; for others, $250. We do not accept display ads. Ads from agencies are not commissionable. Position announcements should be electronically submitted, using the form on the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) Web site, http://www.fass.org/job.asp, for publication in the printed version of the journal and online at the FASS Job Resource Center. Ads that appear in the printed version will automatically be posted online at no extra charge. Ads that are received past the deadline will appear only on the Web site. JDS Collections Article Collections are available now on the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) website. The collections are compilations of significant papers and research developments within a particular subject area, selected by experts in that area. Ċ Assistant Professor. The Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University is seeking candidates for a 9-month, tenure-system, 80% research, 15% teaching, 5% service position at the assistant professor level in reproductive biology of farm animals. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous extramurally funded, basic research program and to contribute to the teaching mission in the discipline. The successful candidate will join the campus-wide program of excellence in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences (http://rdsp.canr.msu.edu/), a growing body
of well-funded, highly interactive faculty. Candidates must possess a PhD in animal or dairy science, physiology, cell or molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or related area with significant expertise in reproductive biology of farm animals. Postdoctoral experience is preferred, as is expertise in dairy cow reproduction. In addition, the ability to communicate application of research effectively to the livestock industry is required. Ċ Assistant Extension Professor. The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences, Mississippi State University, is seeking an assistant extension professor for a 12-month tenure track (80% extension, 20% teaching) position with an emphasis in dairy cattle production or dairy cattle health management. The Animal and Dairy Sciences Department currently houses approximately 300 undergraduate students, 16 graduate students, and 22 faculty, both on campus and at research and extension centers throughout Mississippi. The Department offers BS degrees with concentrations in science/vet-science, animal production, and business and industry. Both MS and PhD degrees are offered from within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Animal and Dairy Sciences. The Department has extension, education, and research facilities that include a 300-head Holstein and Jersey dairy (Bearden Dairy Research Center) located near the main campus. Qualified candidates must have a PhD and/or DVM in animal sciences or a closely related field, with an emphasis in dairy sciences or dairy management. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing statewide leadership and support for the dairy industry, coordinate 4-H programs and adult education, and assist in the management of the Bearden Dairy Research Center. The incumbent will work cooperatively with other extension and research professors, extension area agents, county extension personnel, and industry leaders to accomplish the mission of Mississippi State University. [email protected] for more information. Ċ Dairy Herd Operations Manager. The BS degree in dairy science prepares students for many careers. Cal Poly’s Dairy Science Program is one of the four largest and most dynamic dairy science programs in the United States. The program is supported by extensive dairy production and dairy product processing facilities. The program serves an average enrollment of about 150 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, and comprises 8 full-time faculty and lecturers, several part-

time lecturers, and 5 staff members. The program is focused on the sustainable production and management of dairy animals, applied research, and commercial production of dairy food products. This position plays a major role in the teaching and research portions of the program, and is responsible for managing the Cal Poly Dairy and the facilities involved with this herd of 300+ dairy cattle. Independently, under general supervision and coordination with the department head, this position is responsible for a full range of management duties, as follows: supervise support staff positions, which includes the supervision of a varying number of student interns, enterprise students, and additional dairy operations personnel; train and make work assignments for interns and employees; coordinate assignments with faculty project coordinators; train and oversee dairy production unit employees; and prepare written evaluations of students’ performances at completion of projects and periodically for regular student and staff employees. The position includes responsibility for the health and maintenance of the milking herd, calves, replacement heifers, and any other livestock in the dairy program. Responsible for budgetary oversight of dairy production operations. Incumbent will assist in preparation of project budgets, and the design of research and development of grant proposals, and ensure that all research protocols are properly adhered to throughout studies. Incumbent will be responsible for maintaining production and financial records for Cal Poly’s dairy herd, working closely with state and national dairy and farm bureau associations. Other duties include facility maintenance, water system development and maintenance, waste management, road maintenance, livestock transport, marketing, fence building, and facilitation of alternate grazing management programs.
