B&W and USEC form American Centrifuge Manufacturing
B
lfa Laval has completed the acquisition of Danish marine boiler engineering company Aalborg Industries Holding A/S (see Filtration Industry Analyst, January 2011) in a SEK5 billion deal. With 2600 employees and subsidiaries in 14 countries, Aalborg Industries’ business areas include marine boilers and heat exchangers; inert gas systems; thermal fluid systems; floating production systems; exhaust gas cleaning; water treatment systems; and industrial boilers. “Aalborg Industries is an excellent fit and I’m very pleased to welcome a strong and well-run company into Alfa Laval,” said Lars Renström, president and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group.
abcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group Inc (B&W TSG) and USEC Inc have formed American Centrifuge Manufacturing LLC (ACM) to provide integrated manufacturing and assembly of centrifuge machines for USEC’s American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. Based at USEC’s American Centrifuge Manufacturing Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, ACM will also provide spare parts and other maintenance support services for the American Centrifuge Project. Approximately 160 B&W TSG and USEC employees working at the Oak Ridge facility have been assigned to the new company. Carl Durham, president of Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Clinch River LLC, has been named president and general manager of ACM. Larry Cutlip, who is USEC’s director of centrifuge manufacturing, is vice president. “The formation of ACM brings a new focus on full integration of key manufacturing and assembly operations that support the American Centrifuge Plant,” said S Robert Cochran, president of B&W TSG. “American Centrifuge Manufacturing will be a critical part of the American Centrifuge Project as it focuses on manufacturing and delivering high-quality commercial centrifuges,” said Phil Sewell, USEC senior vice president of American Centrifuge and Russian HEU, and chair of the ACM board of managers. “Combining USEC’s expertise in centrifuge technology with Babcock & Wilcox’s decades of manufacturing expertise, ACM will integrate the activities of multiple suppliers and deliver finished centrifuge machines to the American Centrifuge Plant on time and on budget.” The American Centrifuge is USEC’s next-generation uranium enrichment technology. It is based on US centrifuge technology, an energy-efficient technology originally developed by the US Department of Energy and significantly improved by USEC using updated materials and manufacturing methods.
