Automobile engine overhaul
on j o u r n a l b e a r i n g s is of g r e a t i n t e r e s t as it conrains the s i m p l i f i e d t h e o r y on which the author has b a s e d a p r o g r a m m e for c o m p u t e r aided design. The p r i n c i p l e of o p t i m i z a t i o n is i n t r o d u c e d t o g e t h e r with the concept of a t r a n s i t i o n a l speed, but the i n t e r d e pendence of t h e s e two o p e r a t i n g p a r a m e t e r s is not s t a t e d . A g r a p h i c a l a p p r o a c h to d e s i g n is given, but the author s u g g e s t s that this involves s e v e r a l days of c a l c u l a t i o n and a c o m p u t e r a p p r o a c h is r e c o m mended. D e t a i l s of m a t e r i a l r e q u i r e m e n t s , t o l e r a n c e s and s u r face finish, m a n u f a c t u r e of b e a r i n g pockets and s t a n d a r d i z a t i o n a r e given. In this, as in many o t h e r s e c t i o n s of the book, the depth of d e s i g n e x p e r i e n c e of the author is v e r y evident. R o t a r y t h r u s t and c o n i c a l b e a r i n g s a r e also c o v e r e d and finally t h e r e is a chapt e r on e x t e r n a l l y p r e s s u r i z e d gas b e a r i n g s which is included to give the r e a d e r s o m e indication of the r e l a t i v e advantages of this type of b e a r i n g c o m p a r e d to liquid b e a r i n g s . D e s p i t e the c r i t i c i s m s of d e t a i l s t a t e d above, the book is a m o s t v a l u a b l e contribution on fluid film b e a r i n g design, and it is w a r m l y r e c o m m e n d e d to d e s i g n e r s . The b e s t r e c o m m e n d a t i o n I can give is to s t a t e that having r e a d this book I p u r c h a s e d a p e r s o n a l copy for future r e f e r e n c e .
