‘heft’ that can be indispensable in some applications, and it usually absorbs heat and reflects radiation. However, metal parts are often quite time-consuming and costly to produce, especially in complicated shapes, so designers increasingly turn to plastics for design flexibility, manufacturing ease and cost benefits. Now, with these new heavyweight compounds, they can get the best of both worlds.” Potential applications for the new heavyweight compounds include lead replacement; medical uses, including radiation shielding and radioopaque products; sporting goods such as fishing tackle, weights for golf clubs and tennis racquets, ammunition, gaming/casino chips; highvalue cosmetics and personal-care packaging; underwater-weighting and vibration-dampening applications. Bayer expands Italian colour centre Following large-scale expansion, Bayer MaterialScience’s Color Competence Center (CCC) in Filago, Italy, has significantly extended its range of services for pigmenting thermoplastics. Pigmented granule samples and colour matching samples can now also be produced in small quantities for customers. To do this, various state-of-the-art laboratory extruders were installed, among other things. The service from CCC covers all of the thermoplastics manufactured by Bayer MaterialScience and is based on the Fantasia® colour programme developed by the company. This comprises its proprietary Aura® dip-dye pigmenting technique [ADPO, October 2002], Leda® special effects technology for injection moulding and three other pigmenting techniques, which together open up well over a hundred different visual and tactile effects, the company says. The CCC has set up a dedicated laboratory for the Aura dip-dye technique, which can be used by customers for their own pigmenting tests, with CCC experts on hand. CCC colour specialists do not just help with developing new colours

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES Albemarle flame retardant removed from PBT list Albemarle Corp’s brominated flame retardant Saytex BT-93 (ethylenebis-tetrabromo-phthalimide) has recently been de-listed from the European Union’s list of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) substances following three years of extensive study. This PBT de-listing adds further credence to the fact that BT-93 is non-toxic, not regulated and is an environmentally acceptable flame retardant, Albemarle says. PBT classification sets the stage under the proposed EU REACH regulations for ‘authorization’ (targeted for control and/or substitution) in the short term, and elimination in the longer term. Saytex BT-93 is used in a wide variety of plastic-based products such as computer monitors, electrical connectors, and wire & cable applications.
