Bio: Daniel R. Couriel, MD Dr. Couriel is a medical oncologist and hematologist, with exclusive dedication to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). He is an expert in the area of graft-versushost disease (GVHD), the most important complication of allogeneic HSCT. His clinical research has focused on risk factors, clinical presentations and new treatment modalities for both acute and chronic GVHD. He pioneered numerous treatment modalities for both acute and chronic GVHD, including extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP). He is currently the Clinical Director of Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant at the University of Michigan, and he is applying his extensive experience in the field of GVHD, with particular focus in the care of patients with chronic GVHD and also ECP as an immunomodulatory treatment modality. He is currently conducting a randomized study for the treatment of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis comparing ECP to pulsed steroids, and evaluating possible mechanisms of action that are common to this and other autoimmune conditions.
