M a r g i n a l increase in UK pump market A report published by Market & Business D e v e l o p m e n t Ltd (MBD) has declared that the trend in the UK market for pumps has been for a year of growth followed by a year of decline. T h e report, Market Review 1996 2000, states that between 1996 and 2000 demand is estimated to have increased by 14% in nominal terms. The pumps market in 1996 is estimated at £743.6 million at manufacturers selling prices (MSP).The pumps market is believed to have peaked in 1997 at £830 million at MSP, representing growth of 12%. Sales declined by 9% in 1998 and, although 5% growth was recorded in 1999 it was insufficient to offset the decline recorded in 1998. However, MBD believe that sales increased by 14% to a level of £847.4 million in 2000. MBD expect construction output growth to slow to 3% in

2001 further falling to growth of 2% in 2002, taking total output to an estimated £66.6 million. However, the cyclical effects can be expected to maintain growth at around 1% and 2% throughout the forecast period. MBD believe that market growth will be a consistent feature throughout the beginning of the forecast period. A negligible decline is forecast for 2004 prior to a negligible increase to £866.4 million in 2005. In the same way as the market in recent years has developed at very different rates when individual product sectors are concerned, then so the future d e v e l o p m e n t is expected to occur at different speeds, reflecting the differing performances of the end use markets being served. Sales of centrifugal pumps are forecast to increase by 1% in nominal terms in both 2001 and 2002, taking sales to £220.2 million. However, in 2003

growth is expected to slow to a negligible level, and demand is forecast to decline in 2004 with only marginal increases anticipate in 2001. In the positive displacement sector, sales are forecast to increase by 2% between 2001 and 2003, taking sales to £105.2 million in the latter year. However, MBD anticipate demand to marginally decline to £104.8 million in 2004, a level which is expected to be maintained in 2005. Between 2001 and 2003 sales of other types of pumps are forecast to increase by 2% to £277 million in the latter year. However, MBD anticipate that demand will marginally decline in 2004 to £275.9 million, with a similar level of sales expected in 2005. In the parts sector MBD believe that sales will marginally increase between by 2003. However, demand is forecast to decline to £600.5 million in 2005.
