Hastings posts strong firstquarter results US-based Hastings Manufacturing Co has posted strong results for the first quarter of fiscal 2002, highlighted by improved operations, higher net earnings and the continued diversification of its line of internal engine components. For the first quarter ended 31 March 2002, the manufacturer of piston rings and engine products, which is based in Hastings, Michigan, reported net income of US$295 643, or U$0.40 per share, on net sales of US$9.3 million, compared with net income of US$67 621, or US$0.09 per share, on net sales of US$8.7 million for the corresponding period a year earlier. The company claims that it outperformed many of its peers in the automotive parts market by focusing on productivity and by offering an expanded line of engine parts. It says that its partnerships to market and distribute Zollner pistons and ACL engine parts alongside its Hastings-brand piston rings are allowing it to increase its value as a one-stop engine-parts resource for engine rebuilders, parts warehouses and specialty retailers. RacePac successful in car racing trials In the USA, Timken Co’s new RacePac packaged wheel bearings, featuring a zero-torque seal, recently made a successful début during Busch and Winston Cup qualifying trials at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. 16
The technology helped three drivers achieve good results says the company which developed the packaged wheel bearings to provide racing teams with pre-assembled, ‘race-ready’ front-wheel and rearwheel hubs. Designed using Timken tapered roller bearings, Timken-designed seals, precisely ground spacers and hubs, RacePac wheel bearings provide increased performance and safety, claims the company. The bearings are pre-lubed, pre-sealed and pre-adjusted. In tests, the bearings have run at up to 20–30% cooler on front wheels and up to 30% cooler on rear wheels, compared with standard package bearings, claims Timken. The patented zero-torque seal works off positive air pressure putting grease back into the seal and keeping contaminants out. With less seal drag, more horsepower is available as the tyre and bearing temperatures are reduced. This improves handling at higher speeds and increases driver safety. Nordson develops adhesive dispensing system The Mikros pen is a new adhesive dispensing system that has been introduced by EFD Inc, a unit of Nordson Corp based in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. The company claims that the system, which is targeted at producers of small, precision devices such as fibre-optic components, disk drives and medical equipment, combines a level of dispensing accuracy with material savings previously unavailable to manufacturers. Ideal for dispensing two-part epoxies, ultraviolet (UV)-cure adhesives and other expensive,
high performance assembly fluids, the Mikros system features a disposable 0.25 cc fluid reservoir tip that reduces adhesive waste and lowers production costs. Unlike conventional dispensing methods that hold more adhesive than necessary, the pen system allows material to be mixed in small batches and consumed before their working time, or pot life, expires. The disposable tip attaches to a slim, lightweight aluminium handle that is as easy to maneuver as a writing pen. Used with a microprocessor-based dispenser, the system provides consistent micro-deposits as small as 0.007 inches in diameter. Flowserve streamlines after IFC acquisition Following Flowserve Corp’s acquisition of the Invensys Flow Control division (IFC), which was finalized on 2 May 2002, the company has announced initiatives to help it realize the previously announced annual synergies of US$10–15 million it expects to achieve by December 2003. The company says that it will close six facilities and reduce related personnel by approximately 450 people. The majority of these reductions are planned to occur before March 2003, but it hopes to complete the consolidation by December 2003. Production from a facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana, will be moved to Sulphur Springs, Texas. Other sites which face closure are based in Marlborough, Massachusetts; Olive Branch, Mississippi; Liberty, North Carolina; and Scarborough, Ontario. Production from these facilities will be moved to Cookeville, Tennessee. Production from the site in Provo, Utah, will

Sandvik ends production in Denmark Swedish company Sandvik Hard Materials has decided to end production of cemented-carbide seal rings and wear parts in Espergaerde, Denmark, and transfer production to the unit in Barcelona, Spain. The action affects slightly more than 100 employees and is expected to be completed during the next 12 months. About 30 new employees will be recruited in Barcelona. The closure is part of Sandvik Tooling’s ongoing programme of change that concentrates the number of production and logistics units to increase efficiency and profitability within the business area.
