F O C U S coatings, while the zirconium based nano-scaled conversion coating showed consistent results. It was concluded that the zirconium based nano-scaled conversion coating is generally satisfactory where corrosion resistance is required for HRS with a powder coating system. Article entitled “Evaluation of Pre-treatment Processes for HRS in Powder Coating” by Bulent Tepe and Banihan Gunay of the University of Ulster Faculty of Engineering, N Ireland, UK, published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Apr 2008, 62 (2), 134-144

Powder coatings from Europe have failed to meet the AAMA 2605 standards, but new powder coatings have been formulated in North America to comply with the performance criteria of AAMA 2605. The growing popularity of green construction practices has been propelling the use of powder coatings as an option for coating architectural aluminium in North America.
consistent and cost efficient speciality matte finishes in powder coatings. The Crylcoat range is designed to cope with specific end-application requirements. It also eliminates non-value-added performance of additives for the most suitable resin.

INDUSTRY NEWS Architectural applications for liquid and powder fluoropolymer coatings The use of powder coatings for architectural applications is enjoying rising popularity in view of their environmental advantages. Architects in the USA have long used liquid fluoropolymer coatings for architectural elements such as commercial windows, building panels and curtain walls. Powder coatings emit almost zero volatile organic compounds (VOC) since they are produced without using solvents. Liquid coatings produce VOCs, but applicators in North America have minimized emission through a process that incinerates the VOCs. Powder coatings also entail less waste in application and recovery as well as less transportation energy. In terms of performance, fluoropolymer liquid coatings seem to have the advantage as specifiers face little risk in meeting performance standards set by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association. Liquid coatings consistently meet AAMA 2605 standard and are proven to have durability and good performance in the harsh climate of the southern and south-western USA.

The economic growth of the coatings industry in China is indicated by the interest shown on the exhibit floor and conferences of ChinaCoat 2007. Coatings production in China rose to 3.82 M tonnes in 2005 from 2.98 M tonnes in 2004, as sales increased by 21.84% to $9.14 bn in 2005. The top 10 global coatings companies have at least one production facility in China, while the top raw material suppliers have established operations or jvs in the country. China is No 3 in paint production worldwide and is also the top chemical importer. The country is anticipated to establish itself as the second-biggest consumer of polymers after the USA. China is the top producer of powder coatings, accounting for over 20% of the estimated 1.2 M tonnes global market. Coatings World, Jan 2008, 40,42-43

Akzo Nobel: economy has limited impact on Industrial Coatings in US Akzo Nobel expects the downturn in the US economy will have an adverse effect on its Industrial Coatings division in America but believes it will not be a drastic impact. In 4Q 2007 the ICI operations acquired by Akzo Nobel in America showed 6% growth and the ebit margins improved significantly as a result of cost savings. Measures taken in 2007 should have a positive impact on results in 2008. Het Financieele Dagblad, 6 Mar 2008, (Website: http://www.fd.nl/) (in Dutch)
