Solvay to launch new emulsifier range at 20th International Colloquium Tribology Solvay is launching a brand new emulsifier range aiming at replacing classical cetyl-oleyl chemistry in metalworking fluid applications. The benefits of these new surfactants are a higher sustainability and enhanced performance, the company says. The new emulsifiers provide formulations with a milder labelling as they are not classified as corrosive or environmentally hazardous, it reports. They are also based on globally available vegetable raw materials. In terms of performance, the new emulsifiers provide outstanding defoaming, as well as excellent lowtemperature stability, Solvay claims. New Rhodasurf LF5 is a nonionic emulsifier for cutting fluids and hot rolling fluids and is a sustainable alternative to cetyl-oleyl 5 EO. The new range also includes Rhodasurf LF21, Rhodasurf LF22 and Rhodasurf LF3000. These products will be featured at the 20th International Colloquium Tribology at TA Esslingen, Germany, in Jan 2016. Cambridge University researchers discover way to construct complex structures for use in paints Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Sofia University in Bulgaria have developed a new method for generating complex shapes, and have found that the development of form in nature can be driven by the physical properties of materials themselves, in contrast with earlier findings. The results could enable the construction of complex structures from simple components, with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, paints, cosmetics and household products such as shampoo. Using a simple setup, essentially droplets of oil in a soapy water solution which were slowly frozen, the researchers found that recently-discovered 'plastic crystal' phases formed on the inside surfaces of the droplets causes them to shapeshift into a wide variety of forms, from octahedrons and hexagons to triangles and fibres. The researchers found that by altering the size of the droplets they started with or the rate that the temperature of the soapy solution was lowered, they were able to control the sequence of the shapes the droplets ended up forming.
