F O C U S new top level Deco management structure divided into five regions from eight regions. The new regions are India and Southeast Asia, Latin America, China and North Asia, Central Europe, Southeast Europe and Africa. Significant global functions will be centralized, including human resources, R&D, supply chain, finance, sourcing and information management. The changes will be implemented on 1 Jan 2014 to achieve a more active and competitive company after the divestment of the Decorative Paints North America business. NEW PRODUCTS Arkema introduces new copolymers for injection moulding and extrusion Arkema has introduced Kepstan6000 polyetherketone ketone (PEKK) copolymer, its new high-performance thermoplastic material designed to cater to the oil and gas, automotive, and aerospace sectors. Kepstan6000 allows control of crystallization and has greater adhesion for powder coatings in harsh conditions. It has a 305°C melting temperature and 160°C glass transition temperature. Kepstan6000 includes medium, high, and very high flow grades that allow a broad range of processing technologies, like laser sintering, film/sheet extrusion, thermoforming, calendaring, fibre impregnation, injection moulding, rotomoulding, compression moulding, powder coating, bonding, and welding. Zinc oxide tracks cells Researchers from Chonbuk National University in Korea and 6

National Taiwan University in Taiwan have successfully synthesized about 2 nm zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) with methanol. These nanomaterials have potential antibacterial and antifungal uses in polyurethane and epoxy coatings. Researchers have also identified the potential of ZnO NPs quantum dots (QDs) for biological labelling. They are also seeking ways on how to use the materials for labelling stem cells. ZnO QDs were discovered to be antibacterial, less cytotoxic and can efficiently label a variety of cells, including stem cells. During the experimentation process, researchers started by synthesizing about 2 nm green fluorescent ZnO QDs in methanol. The ZnO QDs were then modified using polyethylene glycol (PEG) to create water-dispersible ZnO QDs. Upon observation, the materials displayed no significant alteration following PEG conjugation. Antibacterial and fluorescent properties as well as biocompatibility remained in the water-dispersible ZnO QDs. ZnO QDs displayed low cytotoxicity in concentrations of 30 ppm or lower, and ZnO QD-labelled adipose-derived adult stem cells (ADAS) remained able to differentiate. Researchers currently plan a detailed analysis of the materials’ potential in biological labelling and other applications. Perstorp at Chinacoat’13: to show Neo Glycol for powder coatings & Capa polyols for PU coatings The Perstorp Group showcased its new Neopentyl Glycol (Neo) and innovative Capa polyols for PU coatings & stoving enamels at Chinacoat 2013. Capa polyols are ideal for premium PU coatings and stoving enamels providing exceptional abrasion resistance with high flexibility. They also represent another product

C O AT I N G S technology from Perstorp that provides a more sustainable coating solution due to the low VOC. Capa is available for high performance 2K PU coatings for substrates sensitive to heat, such as plastics, wood and cars, and objects too big to be stove enameled, such as trains, airplanes and wind turbines. Capa polyols are also ideal for 1K stoving formulations and are particularly important in stoving high performance automotive parts, and coil coatings. Perstorp also presented its range of environmentally friendly products for coatings, such as Voxtar, the world’s first renewable pentaerythritol, as well as its building block PUD technologies, such as Ymer, Capa and Oxymer. Other important products on show were TMP (locally produced in Zibo) for powder coatings and Charmor for intumescent coatings. This includes the new Charmor PM40 Care which has a sharpened sustainable profile, as it is produced from renewable raw material and energy. Original Source: Perstorp, 2013. New primer makes powder coatings adhere to plastics A new technology enables the electrostatic coating of plastics with powder coatings. This is made possible by a new primer which is applied to the cleaned surface. Powder coatings have many advantages over other coating systems and do not require volatile organic solvents. Until now only electricallyconductive materials could be coated with powder coatings. German company Schneider Oberflaechentechnik developed a process together with Offenburg University which makes this method also possible for plastics and composite materials.
