An update from the AORN treasurer
A
ORN’s financial outlook for the year ending Dec. 31, 2013 is strong and secure. Year-end projections indicate AORN will exceed the 2013 budget in revenues and profits. This favorable improvement in revenue is because of increases in membership, increased revenues from education products, and higher revenues from AORN Journal ads. One of the results of having a healthy financial picture is the ability to increase our monetary reserves to allocate funds for needed infrastructure enhancements, development of new products, and emergency needs. As of Sept. 30, 2013, profits for the first nine months were 5.5 percent above last year and association membership was 45,237, which represents a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2012. This is the fourth consecutive year of membership increases. The association budgeted for $20.5 million in revenues for fiscal year 2013 and we expect to exceed that target by the end of December. For 2014 and beyond, AORN will continue to face challenges from various sources, including aging membership, economic uncertainty, reduced government spending, demographic changes in membership, and new laws affecting hospitals and industry partners. These issues are not a surprise to AORN. AORN’s management and Board of Directors continue to monitor these challenges, make recommendations to enrich our core products, and investigate opportunities to enhance services to members. While looking at the future possibilities, we must also evaluate existing programs and services to make sure they continue to provide value for current and future members. The Board of Directors is committed to the continued success of AORN and our sustained economic viability. As 2013 comes to a close, we are preparing for the challenges of 2014. The 2014 budget will proactively address the above challenges and keep us on a successful path. As we move forward, we will continue to seek out opportunities to improve the financial success of AORN while providing effective services to our members.

From the Board
The gift of inspiration To be inspired means to be affected or touched by Denise something or Jackson someone in our lives. To be an inspiration means to stimulate or invigorate, or to stir up a response in others. As perioperative nurses, we have many opportunities to be inspired by the words and actions of others in ways that can profoundly change our beliefs, attitudes, and actions forever. We also have many opportunities to inspire others. What can you do today to be a source of inspiration for someone else? You can show a positive, supportive attitude; share words of encouragement or appreciation; or simply tell someone they are doing a great job. This encouragement could lead to an inspirational moment for someone else. It is a gift to be inspired and it is a gift to be an inspiration to someone else. I hope you receive both of these gifts this holiday season!
