Major water treatment order for Porvair Technology Wrexham, UK-based Porvair Technology Ltd, the specialist in the applied technology of porous media, has announced a 5200,000 order for a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) domed diffuser installation for Thames Water. The contract is for the provision of 12,000 diffusers to be installed as part of improvement to the aeration system at Oxford Sewage Treatment Works. Following a detailed survey by both Thames Water and Porvair, domed diffusers were specified to replace an existing system which had become unreliable because of the ageing of the membranes. It is part of a programme to upgrade the plant generally and to meet tighter future consents issued by the NRA (the UK’s National Rivers Authority). A particular area of concern for Thames Water is the need for high efficiencies at low flow rates, with a minimal head of 2.9 m being available to achieve the desired oxygen transfer rate and efficiency. The Oxford contract follows the successful operation of Porvair’s HDPE diffusers at several other Thames Works, including Basingstoke and Rye Meads. Recent filtration

and separation

Significant improvements are currently being made in many aspects of membrane separation technology - in the development of new membrane materials with higher selectivity and/or permeability, in the fabrication methods for high-flux asymmetric or composite membranes, in membrane module construction and in process design. Membrane separation technology has generated business totalling more than US$l billion annually. In ‘Membrane Separations Technology - Principles and Applications’, edited by R D Sable and S A Stern, the main objective is to present the principles and applications of a variety of membrane separation process from the unique perspective of investigators who have made important contributions to their fields. Another objective is to provide the reader with an authoritative resource on various aspects of this rapidly growing technology. The text can be used by someone who wishes to learn about a general area of application, as well as by the knowledgeable person seeking more detailed information. The volume brings together researches in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering and metallurgy to offer an interdisciplinary perspective on inorganic and organic porous materials. Micro-, meso- and macroporous oxides, metals, polymers and carbons are discussed. Topics include porous materials and their composites based on layered structures; aerogels, xerogels and their composites; porous ceramics, glasses and their composites; porous metals and alloys; porous carbon and polymers; and characterisation of porous materials. Another installation for the Triton underdrain system Wheelabrator Engineered Systems in the UK has been awarded a contract by Northumbrian Water Ltd for the supply of its Triton undertrain ‘Direct Retention’ system. The contract is to supply the system for the four existing filters at Fontburn Water Treatment Works in Morpeth, Northumberland, UK with a capacity to treat up to 22 million litres/ day. Wheelabrator states that the Triton offers considerable advantages over systems currently used in Europe in terms of

performance, ease of installation and maintenance and operating costs, eliminating the problem of ‘filter bed upset that can be experienced with conventional nozzle and similar underdrain systems. Its ability to directly retain filter media eliminates the use of gravel, and saves between 300 to 600 m m of filter depth. West Yorkshire, UK-based Meltog Ltd has secured orders for its model 157 filter tube machine for automotive filter manufacturers in both Italy and the us. Sogefi in Montova, one of Italy’s leading automotive filter manufacturers, has ordered a second 157 Bodymaker from Meltog Ltd, to enhance its overall production capability for perforated metal tubes: Sogefi has a worldwide market for its filters. This order has a value of nearly 190,000 and comprises a fully automatic line taking metal from a reel, cutting it to size,

To prevent the risk of fire, Safelab has built a washdown system inside the ductwork to flush out the perchloric acid deposits.
