BELL EMPLOYEE GARNERS AWARD
HONG KONG SELECTS S-76
Roy G. Fox, Chief Safety Engineer for Bell Helicopter Textron, received the American Helicopter Society's Harry T. Jensen Award for his efforts toward improving rotorcraft safety. A driving force in improving civil helicopter safety over the last decade, Fox provided the analyses for improving helicopter crash survivability. This information culminated with an FAA r u l e m a k i n g proposal, which may reduce fatal and serious helicopter crash injuries by 60% and increase crash survivability for fixed wing aircraft. As a direct result of his efforts, energy attenuating seats and shoulder harnesses are now installed in all new Bell 222, 412, and 214ST helicopters.
The Hong Kong Government has selected the Sikorsky S-76A+ helicopter for use by the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force The $54 million contract calls for five general purpose helicopters and three search and rescue (SAR) variants, and provides for fixed-price options for an additional four general purpose helicopters. The aircraft are scheduled for use in day and night offshore SAIl missions, police trooping, medical evacuation, overland rescue, government VIE and general purpose communications flying. The aircraft will be powered by Turbomeca Arriel engines.
NORTON GETS AEROSPATIALE POSITION Ken Norton, Aerospatiale Helicopt e r C o r p o r a t i o n ' s f o r m e r EMS Specialist, has been promoted to the position of Manager, Marketing Services. In his new position, Norton will be responsible for the support of the regional marketing managers and their sales efforts, and preparation of bid and proposal responses. He will also manage company advertising, public relations and promotional activities, and continue to oversee the EMS market.
OFFSHORE NAVIGATION AWARDED MARYLAND BID Offshore Navigation, Inc. (New Orleans, LA) has been awarded a contract by the State of Maryland in conjunction with the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services (MIEMSS) to f u r n i s h a FLITE-TRAK system for tracking the Maryland State Police helicopters involved in EMS operations as well as other state police activities. The FLITE-TRAK system transmits aircraft position information from aircraft Loran-C receivers to the Communications Center located in Baltimore. HUMANITARIAN GROUP SEEKS SUPPORT Wings of Hope, Inc. (St. Louis, MO), a not-for-profit organization that provides aviation support to remote Third World countries, is unveiling a new advertising/promotional campaign to boost awareness and support from the General Aviation community. "Until recently, we've enjoyed a high level of generosity from our friends in the General Aviation industry," says William Edwards, Executive Vice President of Wings of Hope, Inc. ' B u t economic factors have drained donations to such an extent that we must increase our outreach efforts in order to keep our wings flying." Wings of Hope depends on gifts of used aircraft, used aircraft parts, engines and machinery, and cash donations to support its services in Central and South A m e r i c a n , Australia, Oceania and Africa. More than 20 General Aviation publications are placing Wings of Hope's new ads free of charge. All donations to Wings of Hope are tax deductible.
SWISS AIR RESCUE CHOOSES AGUSTA A109Ks Swiss Air Rescue (REGA) and Gruppo Agusta have announced the signing of the contract to supply REGA with 15 Agusta A109K helicopters. The choice of the Italian A109K comes after a thorough evaluation by REGA to identify a r e p l a c e m e n t helicopter for their fleet of Aerospatiale Alouettes and MBB BO 105's. REGA rescue helicopters operate wherever and whenever necessary, under extreme weather conditions and at altitudes unusual for most helicopter operators worldwide.
