In this section of the j o u r n a l we intend to keep subscribers informed regarding events of significance in neuroscience occurring in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe. These events may be new appointments, medico-political changes or research developments. In addition, a listing of conferences will be maintained. Contributions to this section are welcomed and should be sent to either the Editor-in-Chief or to the compiler of the News page whose address is at the end of the section.

From 7 to 12 September 1997 the 13th International Congress of Neuropathology will be hosted in Perth, directed by Professor Byron Kakulas. Neuroscientists are welcome to attend what should be a most interesting meeting. In September 1998 the International Society of Paediatric Neurosurgeons will meet in Melbourne from 13 to 17 September. This meeting will be combined with the Annual General Scientific Meeting of the NSA which will provide a contrast by concentrating on geriatric neurosurgery.

NSA MEETING 1997 This meeting will be held in Darwin for the second time in the history of the Society. It will extend from Thursday, 18 September to Saturday, 20 September 1997 and the major guest will be Professor A. Rhoton of Gainsville, Florida. The NSA would particularly like to welcome neurosurgeons from our near northern neighbours to attend this meeting, to be held in the most Asian part of Australia. Prior to the NSA meeting, a practice management symposium will be held at Kakadu, focusing on issues of practice of importance to Australian and New Zealand neurosurgeons in particular.

FUTURE INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS Attention is drawn to two forthcoming meetings of international importance.

MASTER OF MEDICINE AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE Applications are again called for entry to this course which may" be undertaken by research and thesis or by course work and a minor research report. The course is for 1 year full-time (offered to Australian and overseas graduates) or 2 years part-time (offered to Australian graduates only). Applications for admission to the Master of Medicine in Clinical Neuroscience is o p e n e d to graduates who have obtained the first part examination of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Consideration will be given to other medical graduates of equal seniority

and qualifications who do not wish to pursue a career in neurology and neurosurgery, but have a scientific interest in furthering their knowledge in clinical neuroscience. Entry to the program will also be o p e n e d to approved medical graduates from other countries with qualifications d e e m e d equivalent to those required for Australian candidates. In general, persons in this category should be at least 2 years post-graduation. Information applications close 31 O c t o b e r and are available from the School of Medicine, University of Melbourne.

NEUROSURGERY IN PAKISTAN From 8 to 10 November 1997 the 4th Asian-Oceanian International Congress of Skull Base Surgery will be held in Islamabad, Pakistan. This meeting is well advanced in planning and will be attended by many international skull base surgeons and neurosurgeons. In 1999, Pakistan will again be the focus for a major meeting, hosting the AsianAustralasian Congress of Neurosurgical Society in Lahore. Many other important meetings will be held in the Asian area in forthcoming months and years. Information regarding meetings should be sent to the Editor of this section a minimum period of 6 months prior to the meeting.
