Additives for Polymers
important additive in rubber sealing caps for pharmaceutical products. It provides reinforcement and chemical inertness, while also having a low content of heavy metal and extractable substances and offering easy processing. Treatment of sisal to improve composites with polyethylene Chemical treatments using sodium hydroxide, isocyanate, permanganate and peroxide improve the fibre/polymer interface bonding of sisal-reinforced polyethylene and also considerably enhance the tensile properties of the composite, but to differing degrees. Treatment with CTDIC (cardanol derivative of toluene diisocyanate) reduces the hydrophilic nature of the sisal fibre and thus improves the tensile properties of low density polyethylene/sisal composites. In an examination by researchers at Mahatma Ghandi University and the Regional Research Institute, Kerala, India, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photomicrographs of fracture surfaces showed that in CTDICtreated composites the polyethylene was highly bonded to the sisal fibre. Enhancement by addition of small amounts of peroxides was attributed to peroxide-induced grafting of the polyethylene onto the sisal fibre surfaces. The best tensile properties were obtained from composites which had been treated with dicumyl peroxide, and with CTDIC. The overall ranking of the different treatments for their improvement in properties was: DCP > CTDIC > BP > KMnO, > alkali. PE/sisal composites have an appearance like wood, and can be used as a substitute for wood. Polymer, Vol. 5139-5149
